Jeremiah’s Cheating Scandal Ruins Relationship with Belly Forever

The third installment of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” titled “We’ll Always Have Summer,” unveiled the heartbreaking reason behind Belly’s separation from Jeremiah, a sad turn of events in their love story. The Amazon Prime Video series resumes with its concluding season, following Belly (portrayed by Lola Tung) as she embarks on a journey of self-realization, dealing with the intricacies of her romantic entanglement with Jeremiah Fisher (played by Gavin Casalegno). The upcoming Season 3 heavily draws inspiration from “We’ll Always Have Summer,” implying that much of what transpired for Belly in the novel will be translated onto our screens. Indeed, Episode 1 showcased a significant event in their relationship: their breakup.

In Season 3 Episode 1 of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” it was revealed that Jeremiah had been unfaithful during his spring break trip to Cabo, causing a significant rift in his relationship with Belly. Notably, this same scenario played out in the books, further straining an already precarious bond between Belly and Jeremiah.

In the third season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” which debuted on Amazon Prime Video on July 16, 2025, you’ll see the return of Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, Christopher Briney, Sean Kaufman, Rain Spencer, and Jackie Chung.

Why Did Jeremiah & Belly Break Up in Summer I Turned Pretty Book 3?

In the concluding chapter of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series, titled “We’ll Always Have Summer,” it was disclosed that Belly and Jeremiah parted ways for the same reason. It transpired that Jeremiah too had a liaison with Lacie Baron, a sorority sister, during a fraternity party at spring break.

Jeremiah chose to conceal the truth from Belly, as he was afraid of losing her. This act, though daring, was questionable given Belly’s upright character. However, his secret eventually led to his downfall.

At a party following exams, Belly listened in as Lacie and her companions reminisced about spring break, when Jeremiah had spent the night with Lacie. Upon questioning Jeremiah, he admitted to the incident. Yet, Jeremiah emphasized that they were on a “break” at the time, implying it wasn’t considered significant.

Jeremiah made this statement regarding their dispute prior to the arrival of spring break, which appeared to conclude with them “splitting up.” However, Belly didn’t interpret it as such, believing instead that it was merely a miscommunication.

In a different perspective, Jeremiah thought it was fine to be with Lacie since he assumed they weren’t in a relationship at that time. However, discovering this infidelity played a significant role in their actual split, as detailed in the novel.

Despite the cheating scandal seriously straining their bond, the duo reconciled as Jeremiah confessed his deep-seated fear of losing Belly forever. Jeremiah then asked for Belly’s hand in marriage, which she agreed to (though it seems that some residual feelings for Conrad remained).

In the show, I found myself in a position where my own plans to embark on a study-abroad journey to Paris were thwarted by Jeremiah’s proposition.

Did Jeremiah Really Love Belly?

It’s clear that Jeremiah had strong feelings for Belly in both the books and the show. However, the fact that he didn’t openly disclose his hookup with Lacie during spring break might make people question his commitment towards his girlfriend, as such secrecy could indicate a lack of loyalty.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase Jenny Han’s statement as follows: Regarding Jeremiah’s infidelity in “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” she hinted that it’s open to interpretation by fans. The reason being, they were already separated at the time the incident occurred, so how one perceives it is largely dependent on personal perspective.

It’s open for discussion if that counts as cheating or not, given their past separation. The interpretation can vary greatly among individuals.

It was evident that Jeremiah caused Belly emotional pain, regardless of whether he cheated or not, which ultimately led her to question her feelings for him. In both the book and the series, Belly concealed something from Jeremiah after celebrating Christmas with Conrad at the Cousins’ home; however, it should be noted that they did not engage in any physical intimacy during this time, unlike Jeremiah’s actions.

It was evident that there were ongoing disputes between Jeremiah and Belly. Jeremiah’s impulsive behavior painted him as an unreliable companion who might abandon Belly when faced with adversity. However, Belly still harbors feelings for Conrad that have not been addressed, which could become more challenging if she chooses to stay with Jeremiah. She would continually ponder the “what-ifs” in this situation.

All in all, marriage is not a long-term band-aid solution that would miraculously fix them.
