Will Jeremy Renner reprise his role as Hawkeye in 2026? While the cast for Avengers: Doomsday is growing, it’s still uncertain which original Avengers will appear in the next big Marvel crossover. Currently, only Chris Hemsworth as Thor is confirmed, but there’s speculation that others will join him. Chris Evans’ potential return is a major question, Mark Ruffalo is likely to be announced soon, but Jeremy Renner is perhaps the most interesting possibility.
There’s growing speculation about whether Hawkeye will appear in Doomsday. While promoting the new season of Mayor of Kingstown (premiering October 26th), Jeremy Renner spoke with ComicBook and shared his thoughts on Hawkeye’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He addressed whether Clint Barton has fully retired and what it would take to bring him back into action as a hero.
He’s technically retired several times, but he keeps returning to work. Family is clearly his priority, and he’s always put his loyalty with them. It seems like he’ll keep working as long as he’s able.
Hawkeye’s Future Reveals The Harsh Reality of MCU Heroes
Hawkeye had actually retired multiple times. He initially stepped back before Avengers: Age of Ultron and was put on house arrest after Captain America: Civil War, causing him to miss Avengers: Infinity War. He retired again when his Disney+ show began, but was drawn back into action due to his history as Ronin. As Jeremy Renner points out, what really defines Hawkeye is his willingness to always return when needed, making him a true hero.
Hugh Jackman might be stuck playing Wolverine for decades, but he could at least eventually retire. For Hawkeye, the outlook is much bleaker – it seems his story will end in death. This isn’t a new idea; after Endgame came out, director Joe Russo hinted that Iron Man’s fate foreshadowed potential deaths for other heroes, and he had a good reason for doing so.
It always felt like Tony Stark’s story was destined to end with his death. What’s interesting is how people react to that idea – some get really upset. But that’s essentially the role of a hero: to make the ultimate sacrifice for the benefit of others. That’s the message we wanted to convey with the movie – you either act selfishly, or you dedicate yourself to something bigger than yourself. Tony Stark always chose to serve the greater good.
Considering those statements, things aren’t looking good for Hawkeye if he joins the fight in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 begins on Paramount+ on October 26.
