Jesse Eisenberg Breaks Silence On Why He Won’t Play Mark Zuckerberg In The Social Network Sequel

More than ten years after the release of The Social Network, Sony is revisiting the story with a new film, The Social Reckoning. Now, as Aaron Sorkin tells the story of a key moment in Facebook’s history, the lead actor from the 2010 movie has finally explained why he won’t be returning for the sequel.

Jesse Eisenberg, known for playing Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, recently explained on TODAY why he won’t be returning for a sequel. He started by saying that his decision has nothing to do with the quality of the potential new movie.

Jesse Eisenberg explained that when you inhabit a character for a while, you inevitably change as a person. When asked if he felt he’d moved past the role, he simply said, “Yeah, somewhat.”

I have to say, even though I’m not in the new movie, I’m genuinely excited about it. I’m good friends with Aaron Sorkin, who wrote and directed it, and he’s fantastic. Honestly, the reasons I didn’t appear have absolutely nothing to do with how great I think the film is going to be.

Since Jesse Eisenberg isn’t involved in the new film, Jeremy Strong has been confirmed to play Mark Zuckerberg in the movie, which is scheduled to be released in 2026. Fans also shouldn’t anticipate seeing Andrew Garfield reprise his role, as he stated in an interview with IndieWire that he won’t be returning.

Garfield said, “Eduardo [Saverin] is currently enjoying himself in Singapore.” The film, The Social Reckoning, centers on Frances Haugen, portrayed by Mikey Madison, a Facebook engineer who leaked internal information to the media about the company’s practices.

Jeremy Allen White will portray Jeff Horowitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who, alongside Frances Haugen, revealed the “Facebook Files” in 2021. Bill Burr and Wunmi Mosaku are also joining the cast, though their roles haven’t been disclosed yet.

Filming for the movie, originally known as “Goliath,” started in Vancouver, Canada on October 22, 2025, as reported by Vancouver is Awesome. The movie, now titled The Social Rekoning, is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 9, 2026.
