Jessie Buckley is hamming it up at the 2026 Oscars.
After winning Best Actress at the awards show on March 15th – hosted by Conan O’Brien at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater – the star of Hamnet shared a surprising story about how her family was able to be there.
Jessie shared from the stage that her entire family, who are originally from Ireland, were able to attend thanks to flights provided by the Irish government.
And because they were in-person, she was able to praise them to their faces.
Okay, seriously, when she said, “Mom, Dad, thank you for teaching us to dream,” I almost lost it! It was so powerful. And then, to add that we should never let anyone else tell us who we are, but to build our lives around what we actually love? Ugh, chills! It just perfectly sums up everything she stands for, you know? It’s like she’s saying we all have the power to create our own paths, and it’s just… everything!
Jessie publicly acknowledged her husband, Freddie Sorensen, and their 8-month-old daughter, Isla.
She told Fred, “I love you so much! You’re an amazing dad and my best friend. I can’t imagine my life without you and I want to keep growing our family.”
Jessie continued, “And to my sweet Isla, who’s only eight months old and has no clue what’s happening – she’s probably dreaming about milk! – I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be your mom. I can’t wait to see what life brings as we experience it together.”
Before the awards ceremony, Jessie had already become known for giving moving acceptance speeches. She’d won several awards for her role as Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, in Chloé Zhao’s historical film. This time, she was nominated alongside Rose Byrne (for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (for Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (for Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (for Bugonia).
I was so thrilled to hear her speak at the Actor Awards earlier this month! She gave such a lovely shout-out to Emily Watson, saying Emily really inspired her to pursue acting. It was a beautiful moment, and I’m so glad she acknowledged Emily’s impact on her career.
You know, I was so touched by Jessie’s speech the other night. She shared something really beautiful about what inspires her, and it really resonated with me. She said my creativity, strength, and even my kindness are a source of light for her, which honestly meant the world. But the best piece of advice she’s ever given me? It’s so simple: always reconnect with what it means to be human. It’s a reminder that amidst everything, grounding yourself in genuine emotion and connection is what truly matters. It’s something I try to live by every day, and I think we all could benefit from remembering it.
She added, “You’re the realest of the real. I love and cherish being part of this community.”

Jessie received her first Academy Award nomination for her role in the 2021 film The Lost Daughter, where she starred with Olivia Colman. She also gained attention at the Golden Globes in January when she playfully told her co-star Paul Mescal, “I could drink you like water.”
As for what she meant by that?
Jessie told reporters that this actor is crucial to her work and has helped her understand her full potential. She explained that he helps you connect with your deepest emotions, and once you’ve experienced that, it feels natural and effortless – like breathing.
In addition to Jessie, read on to see who else took home Oscars gold at the 2026 ceremony.
