Jey Uso Enters Rare Club Following WWE Intercontinental Championship Win

As a die-hard wrestling fan with decades of ringside experience under my belt, I must say that Jey Uso’s recent win of the WWE Intercontinental Championship has added another layer to his already impressive career. Having grown up watching his father, Rikishi, dominate the squared circle, it’s truly heartwarming to see Jey join this exclusive club as a second-generation Intercontinental Champion.

Back in the Fall of 2020, I found myself making waves in the singles division, going after my brother Roman Reigns who was the Universal Champion at the time. Over a couple of months, our rivalry heated up, but when Jimmy Uso got back to health, I shifted my focus back to tag team wrestling. This move led to an unforgettable run as Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions with The Usos, keeping me busy with duo contests for the next few years.

On Monday night, I finally clinched the WWE Intercontinental Championship on Raw after five straight losses in singles championship matches. I took down Bron Breakker to claim the gold with a powerful spear and splash combo. The WWE Intercontinental Title has a history with my family, as my legendary father, Rikishi (WWE Hall of Famer), previously held that title back in 2000.

Rikishi and Jey are only the second pair of fathers and sons to have been WWE Intercontinental Champions. The first father-son duo to achieve this feat was “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig and Curtis Axel. Mr. Perfect won the WWE Intercontinental Title on two separate occasions, holding it in 1990 and 1991, while Curtis Axel’s only reign with the title occurred in 2013.

This father-son WWE Intercontinental Champion club is reserved for a select few competitors, as there are only a handful of at-minimum second-generation professional wrestlers currently active and anywhere close to this specific title. The next likeliest option to join this club is independent wrestler Zilla Fatu, the son of Umaga. Zilla has been connected to WWE for his entire wrestling career and is expected to eventually sign with the company and join The Bloodline on television. Another possible name is NXT’s Charlie Dempsey, the son of former WWE Intercontinental Champion William Regal. There is no word regarding when WWE is planning on bringing Dempsey to the main roster. Both of Billy Gunn’s sons, AEW stars Austin and Colten, could also fit this mold.

Jey competes on WWE Monday Night Raw every Monday at 8 PM ET on USA Network.
