Warner Bros. is finally making a live-action movie based on the classic cartoon The Jetsons, and Jim Carrey is being considered to play the main character. The project is also gaining traction with Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow in talks to direct and help write the screenplay. This is a big step forward for the film, especially after Carrey’s popular performance as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, which showed he can still attract audiences to family films.

The classic cartoon The Jetsons was a popular comedy about a family living in a bright, futuristic world filled with technology. Jim Carrey is being considered to play George Jetson, the family’s dad, who was known as a kind, but often stressed and ordinary guy. A film about a 40-year-old George would focus on building a future, while a movie with a 60-year-old George would likely explore themes of approaching retirement and reflecting on his life. While this could be an interesting direction, the script needs to make this major change a central part of the story.

Another challenge is blending Jim Carrey’s comedic style with the already-established personality of George Jetson. Carrey is famous for his over-the-top, physical humor, seen in roles like Ace Ventura and The Grinch. This energetic style is very different from George Jetson, whose comedy comes from his frustrated responses to the crazy, high-tech world around him. If they updated The Jetsons, they could use that ability to make George Jetson’s stress feel really relatable – not just a funny cartoon thing, but a genuine reflection of the anxieties many of us feel today. I think Carrey could really nail that.
