Jim Carrey Will Reportedly Return for Sonic The Hedgehog 4

Production on Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has begun, and sources say Jim Carrey is filming with the cast. While Paramount hasn’t officially confirmed his involvement, fans are excited about the possibility of his return.

Jim Carrey has played Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the villain, in the first three Sonic the Hedgehog movies. His performance as the main antagonist has been a key part of the series since the first film in 2020, and he reprised the role in both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).

Carrey’s Comments

The actor considered retirement in 2022, but he ultimately returned to the Sonic film series. He reprised his role as Dr. Robotnik and also played Dr. Gerald Robotnik, the character’s grandfather, in the third movie.

In a 2024 interview, Jim Carrey said he’d be open to returning as Dr. Robotnik in a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie, but it would depend on the direction the filmmakers wanted to take the character.

I’m not making any promises, but everything depends on what feels right at the time. Usually, Toby Asher and Jeff Fowler will pitch me ideas for Robotnik, and we’ll discuss them. I’m definitely open to it! I’m really enjoying myself, and I love the fans and the rich history of the Sonic universe. It’s great to be part of that. It’s also exciting to see actors like Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba joining the project – they clearly see something special in it, and I think that speaks to the heart of this franchise.

Status of a Fourth Film

Filming for Sonic 4 reportedly started in early March. The movie is currently scheduled to come out in March 2027. Since production is just beginning, Paramount hasn’t shared many details about the cast, story, or how the movie is being made.

While Paramount hasn’t revealed much yet, extra footage from the third movie suggests Amy and Metal Sonic will be joining the cast.
