In the recently released Netflix animated film, “KPop Demon Hunters,” concludes with a selfless act by the character Jinu, which aligns perfectly with his persona. This movie centers around the trio of K-pop idols (Rumi, Mira, and Zoey), who secretly function as demon hunters. Their mission is to thwart the emergence of the demon king, Gwi-Ma, from devouring human spirits. Although Gwi-Ma, voiced by Lee Byung-hun from “Squid Game,” serves as the primary antagonist, he relies on other demons to carry out his wishes, including Jinu, who establishes a boy band (comprised of demon members) to challenge HUNTR/X.
In the film “KPop Demon Hunters,” the story gradually unfolded the past of the character Jinu, offering viewers a deeper insight into his driving forces. It was revealed that Jinu used to be human, driven by the longing for a better life, which led him to transform under the malevolent influence of Gwi-Ma, thus abandoning his family. With an intriguing backstory and an unexpected close relationship with one of the demon hunters, the movie set up an engaging character development trajectory for Jinu (portrayed by Ahn Hyo Seop).
Why Did Jinu Die In KPop Demon Hunters?
In my cinematic journey, I, as a passionate cinephile, found myself drawn into a captivating tale where the character Jinu strategically approached Rumi, the leader of HUNTR/X. What made this connection intriguing was the revelation that Rumi, much like myself, carries the dual essence of both human and demon within her.
Jinu skillfully exploited Rumi’s hidden past to gain an upper hand, all while attempting to empathize with her turmoil by emphasizing their shared half-human heritage. This was a fascinating dynamic that unfolded on the silver screen, leaving me eager to uncover more about their complex relationship.
In actuality, though he presented a heartrending tale about being coerced by Gwi-Ma to leave his loved ones, his true motivation stemmed from ambition and a desire for a prosperous life. The arrangement with Gwi-Ma was not the initial reason for his departure; instead, he voluntarily forsook his family in pursuit of fame and recognition.
Instead of merely attempting to seize control over Rumi and Jinu’s new band, the Saja Boys, they also aimed to win over their fans, making it simpler for Gwi-Ma to exert his influence. This way, the fans would be more inclined to accept Gwi-Ma’s control, thereby diminishing the effect of the Honmoon, a protective barrier against demons.
As the story unfolded, it grew apparent that Jinu remained fundamentally kind-hearted. His desires were focused on breaking free from Gwi-Ma’s control and having his past regrets wiped clean – a longing to forget the pain of leaving his loved ones behind.
Despite ultimately revealing Rumi’s half-demon nature to others, leading to her ostracization, Jinu chose to prioritize what he believed was best for humanity by giving his life in order to protect Rumi from Gwi-Ma during the climactic battle. This selfless act enabled Jinu’s human spirit to bond with Rumi, granting her the strength to deliver the decisive blow against Gwi-Ma and vanquish him completely.
It was fitting that selfless Jinu chose to give up his life to save Rumi, as he wasn’t portrayed as a villain initially. Instead, he had been influenced by Gwi-Ma, but his deep connection with Rumi brought out his hidden compassionate side.
Although it’s sad that Jinu met an unfortunate demise, his death ultimately fulfilled what he yearned for all along: to release himself from the burden of guilt he carried for abandoning his family, by sacrificing himself heroically to save humanity in the best manner possible.
Will Jinu Return in a Potential KPop Demon Hunters 2?
It seems that Jinu’s death in the series “KPop Demon Hunters” may have seemed final, but there remains a possibility for his return if a sequel to the Netflix movie is ever made (you can learn more about the director’s thoughts on a sequel here).
In the series “KPop Demon Hunters,” they barely touched upon the vast mythology that spans countless battles between demon hunters and demons. If the next installment chooses to delve deeper into the past, it might include flashbacks featuring Jinu, who lived for over 400 years before his passing.
In light of the intriguing revelation about her descent from demons, it’s anticipated that Rumi will continue to play a pivotal role in the future narratives of KPop Demon Hunters. This setup could provide an opportunity for Jinu to appear through hallucinations or visions, offering assistance as Rumi navigates her journey ahead.
