Joey Chestnut Reveals ‘Burping’ Prep for Hot Dog Eating Contest

As a devoted competitor, I’ve unveiled my secrets for getting ready for the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4th. The key lies in practicing burping exercises and adhering to specific dietary restrictions.

In an interview with The New York Post on June 28th, he expressed his strong belief that there’s just one possible outcome for this competition. He stated that once his opponents realize he’s firmly convinced, and the audience shares this conviction, it becomes extremely difficult for them to prevail. If he can convince himself first, then everyone else tends to follow suit.

This year, the professional eater who currently holds the world record at the age of 41, returns to the contest in Coney Island, New York. His return follows a ban imposed on him earlier due to a sponsorship agreement he had entered into for a line of plant-based products.

In preparation for the Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4, Chestnut revealed his approach. Emphasizing the key element of maintaining tranquility the eve of the contest, he stressed the importance of staying calm.

“He mentioned that he often watches outdated routines, which resemble simulated competitions, with him appearing to gulp air and move mechanically.”

“Typically, he’s in bed by 9 p.m., wakes up around 5 a.m., then performs stretches, yoga, and burping exercises to loosen and stretch his stomach after a night’s sleep.

He often consumes “aloe vera juice” to maintain a moist throat, while he tends to minimize solid foods for several hours prior to mealtime.

He mentioned, “On the day prior, I often need to consume a hot dog at the weigh-in. Prior to that, I typically have eggs for breakfast. Sometimes a small amount of protein, such as a protein shake on that day. I go in completely empty, particularly on the day of the contest.

After setting a record for consuming the most hot dogs, one might be curious about how the rest of the day unfolds for Chestnut. To begin with, it’s safe to say he foregoes his evening meal.

He typically spends his time in bed, but if he wakes up from sleeping, he might go for a walk. For meals, it’s usually just some yogurt or a small salad, with nothing much until the next day. Even when he isn’t hungry, he tries to eat a salad to keep things moving.

This month, Chestnut expressed his joy at being back at the Nathan’s competition, stating that competing for the brand once more means a great deal to him.

He expressed on Instagram on June 17 that it’s a treasured custom, a showcase of American heritage, and a significant aspect of his personal life. Although he collaborates with several companies, both traditional and plant-based, these partnerships have never clashed with his affection for hot dogs. To clarify: Nathan’s is the only hot dog brand I’ve ever been associated with.

He continued, “I acknowledge the varying viewpoints, yet I’m thankful we’ve managed to agree on something. I’m thrilled to be returning to the Coney Island stage, living out my passion, and enjoying the Fourth of July with hot dogs in hand! Keep being enthusiastic!

The 2025 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest airs Friday, July 4, on ESPN.
