As a passionate cinephile, I’ve recently had the pleasure of delving into the gripping world of “Freelance,” masterfully directed by the action maestro, Pierre Morel – the very same visionary behind the pulse-pounding thriller “Taken.” Initially released to a more modest audience, this film has now found its rightful place on Netflix in August and is swiftly making waves. Currently holding the seventh spot among the top 10 most popular films on Netflix in the United States, it’s clear that “Freelance” has earned its recognition as a must-see action masterpiece.
Fast, Funny, and Fairly Obvious: Freelance is a Netflix Hit
In a nutshell, the storyline of “Freelance” is straightforward: John Cena portrays Mason Pettits, a disgruntled lawyer trapped in a monotonous office job. Given his past as a medically retired special forces operative, he receives an offer to freelance as a bodyguard for a fallen journalist. Alison Brie, known for her role in “Community”, steps into the scene as Claire Wellington, a journalist on the brink who seeks to interview a vengeful dictator, President Juan Venegas (played by Juan Pablo Raba), of the fictional South American nation, Paldonia.
Previously, an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Raba had left Mason injured and out of action. Later, with some hesitation, Mason and Claire travel to Paldonia, only to find themselves in the midst of a coup masterminded by President Venegas’ followers during their pursuit of a sensational story. Forced into hiding in the jungle, they embark on a challenging journey that deepens their relationship as they skillfully fend off adversaries.
The film’s success primarily lies in the engaging performances and distinctive personalities of its three main actors. Raba exudes elegance and charm, while John Cena flawlessly embodies the lovable yet dimwitted action hero. Brie’s sharp wit adds a delightful touch of comedy to the narrative. Watching their interactions is genuinely entertaining.
As a devoted movie buff, I’ve got to say that while this film isn’t exactly breaking new ground with its storyline and themes, it doesn’t need to. It delivers on what it promises: a thrilling action ride! The coup, the intense one-on-one fights, and all the jungle action may feel familiar, but that’s part of the charm. This movie isn’t aiming for high art or complex narratives; instead, it offers up an entertaining blend of familiar tropes. So, it seems a bit harsh that it’s been criticized so heavily when it was never intended to be anything more than a fun and typical action film.
I must admit, the special effects are impressively handled, pleasantly surprising me. Despite the Stormtroopers’ atrocious aim, the action scenes are skillfully orchestrated. In essence, this film maintains a light-hearted tone, and I suggest you adopt the same approach while watching it. This isn’t your typical masterpiece like ‘Inglorious Basterds,’ so keeping unrealistic expectations at bay would be advisable.
As a movie enthusiast, dive into the film with an easygoing spirit, as if it was crafted for those cozy Friday nights in with a bag of popcorn. Just like numerous online critics have pointed out, this one wasn’t necessarily designed for a grand theatre debut, but shines brightly on streaming platforms, which might explain its recent surge in popularity since landing on Netflix. Essentially, Freelance isn’t your deep, thought-provoking film. It won’t redefine cinema or leave you speechless. However, it will undoubtedly keep you entertained, if you let it.
