John Hannah confirmed for all-new “witty and charming” detective series Death in Benidorm

Following the announcement of the new murder mystery series, Death in Benidorm, earlier this year, Channel 5 has revealed the main cast, with John Hannah taking the lead role.

Hugh Grant, the actor famous for films like Four Weddings and a Funeral and TV shows like Black Mirror and The Last of Us, will star as Dennis in a new six-episode series. Dennis is a detective who tries to escape his troubled past by leaving the busy life in the UK to run a bar in Benidorm.

But when tourists begin dying, he’s pulled back into investigating, despite his reluctance. He’s encouraged by Rosa, the bartender – a true crime enthusiast who unexpectedly becomes his partner in solving the cases.

Each episode of the series features Dennis, who draws on his practical experience, and Rosa, a TV expert, as they investigate a new murder in a beautiful location. They also have to navigate working with the local Spanish police.

The series will also star Carolina Bécquer as Rosa, Ariadna Cabrol as Maria, and Damian Schedler Cruz as Jesús.

Ian Jarvis, the creator of shows like The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin and Beyond Paradise, developed this series. Simon Delaney, known for his work on Death in Paradise, directed it.

Yasmine Akram (known for Flack), Claire Downes (The Outlaws), and Tom Parry (Your Christmas or Mine) are also writing for the series.

Greg Barnett, an editor at Channel 5, announced his excitement about casting John Hannah. He believes Hannah is ideal for the part of Dennis, describing the character as intelligent, funny, and world-weary, and predicts audiences will quickly connect with him.

I was really surprised to hear that *Death in Benidorm* won’t be coming back. It was announced alongside some exciting new shows like *Cooper and Fry* and *Imposter*, plus renewals for favorites like *The Teacher*, *The Madame Blanc Mysteries*, and *The Hardacres*. It’s a shame, but at least there’s plenty of other great stuff on the way!
