Eric Dane had one less thing to worry about amid his ALS battle thanks to Johnny Depp.
Following the sad passing of the Grey’s Anatomy actor after a struggle with ALS, TopMob News has discovered that the Pirates of the Caribbean star generously offered him a place to live at one of his Los Angeles properties, without charge.
The kind gesture happened at a perfect moment. Patrick Dempsey, a friend and former co-star from Grey’s Anatomy, explained that in the final months of Dane’s illness – a disease that gradually weakens all the body’s muscles – he was almost completely unable to move. Dempsey shared this just one day after Dane passed away on February 19th.
Patrick explained in a February 20th interview with Virgin Radio UK that his father was losing his ability to speak, was confined to bed, and had difficulty swallowing. He said his father’s quality of life was declining quickly.
Even though Dane had a strong support system – including his former partner Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he stayed very close after their split in 2017, and his daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14 – he needed a lot of help from others to get by during the last few months of his life.
Rebecca wrote in an article for The Cut in December 2025 that Eric now has nurses available around the clock. The nursing care is scheduled in 21-hour shifts, but sometimes those shifts go uncovered, and Rebecca steps in to fill them.
The 54-year-old also shared that she greatly appreciated and needed any assistance she could find while providing care for him.
After Eric shared his story publicly, we were overwhelmed by the support we received. His friends, family, and colleagues were incredibly kind and generous, offering everything from helpful advice to valuable connections and resources. It was truly heartwarming to see everyone rally around him.
It was also helpful for Rebecca to connect with people who have been in her shoes.

I’ve been contacted by several women who are going through or have experienced the same things I am, and it’s been incredibly helpful to connect with them. I’m really thankful for their support.

Eric Dane revealed he received an ALS diagnosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, in April 2025.
Dane shared with People magazine that he’s been diagnosed with ALS. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family as they face this new challenge together.

Despite his recent diagnosis, the Euphoria actor confirmed he wasn’t retiring from acting. He announced in April 2025 that he was still filming the last season of the HBO show.
Dane, who recently starred in the Amazon MGM Studios series Countdown, shared that acting has helped him stay mentally focused while dealing with health challenges.
I’m a huge fan, and I was so happy to hear him tell TopMob News back in June 2025 that he genuinely loves what he does! He admitted things haven’t always been easy, but he feels good overall. What really struck me is how positive he is – he says staying upbeat is what’s most important, and I totally agree. It’s inspiring to see someone with that kind of attitude!

Two months after revealing he had been diagnosed, the former Grey’s Anatomy star openly discussed his experience, including the signs that prompted him to seek medical attention.
In June 2025, Dane shared with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America that he first noticed weakness in his right hand. He didn’t think much of it initially, assuming it was from texting or simply being tired. However, a few weeks later, he realized the weakness was getting worse.
After nine months of doctor’s visits – seeing two hand specialists and two neurologists – Dane received a diagnosis of ALS.
The father of two said he’ll never forget receiving those three letters. They weigh heavily on his mind from the moment he wakes up, and it feels all too real – not like a bad dream.

He explained how the rare disease has impacted his health and also shared his expectations for how it will progress in the future.
During his interview with Sawyer, Dane explained that the left side of his body is still working, but his right side has completely stopped. He added that he worries he may lose function in his left hand within a couple of months, which he described as a stark and humbling realization.

Oh my gosh, it’s just so heartwarming to see! Dane is fighting this health thing, and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart – they’ve been married for over 20 years, can you believe it? – she’s been right there with him. It’s amazing because they were actually getting divorced – she filed papers back in 2018 – but she dismissed it all in March! They’re clearly still so devoted to each other, and it just makes my heart melt to see them supporting each other through everything.
During his interview with Sawyer, Dane said he speaks with Rebecca daily. They’ve grown closer as both friends and parents, and he considers her his biggest advocate and strongest source of support, someone he relies on heavily.
According to Gayheart, she and Dane are the “best of friends.”
The Beverly Hills, 90210 star told TopMob News on April 9, 2025, that they have a strong co-parenting relationship. They’ve found a way to successfully stay a family, which is really benefiting both their children and themselves.

Dane has been celebrating achievements with his daughters, Billie and Georgia, but he’s also shared that he struggles with how his ALS is impacting his family.
The actor shared that he’s struggling with anger stemming from the loss of his father when he was a child. He’s now facing the possibility of being separated from his own daughters at a young age, which is deeply upsetting. Ultimately, he just wants to be with his family and continue working when he can.

Dane was scheduled to present at the 2025 Emmys with his Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Jesse Williams, on September 14th, but he couldn’t make it. He later revealed that he had to miss the show due to a hospital stay.
In an interview with The Washington Post on October 2nd, he revealed he was hospitalized getting stitches while others were at the Emmys, explaining, ‘ALS is a terrible disease.’
“I was a really upset about it,” Dane added. “But you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”

In September 2025, Dane met with doctors and representatives from the I Am ALS organization, and discussed the need for federal funding for ALS research with California Congressman Eric Swalwell. ALS is a neurological disease that currently has no cure.
I was really moved by what Dane shared with Swalwell in that TikTok video. He said he just wants to ‘ring every bell’ – basically, experience all of life’s big moments. What really hit home for me was when he talked about his daughters. He wants to be there for them, to see them grow up, go to college, find love, and maybe even become grandparents someday. It’s a beautiful, relatable wish, and it felt so genuine.

Dane passed away on February 19th at the age of 53 after a year-long struggle with ALS. According to a statement from his family to TopMob, he was surrounded by loved ones – his wife, daughters, and close friends – during his final days.
Eric’s family shared that throughout his battle with ALS, he dedicated himself to raising awareness and supporting research, hoping to help others facing the disease. He will be greatly missed and remembered with love. Eric cherished his fans and was thankful for all the support he received. The family asks for privacy as they grieve.
