While Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) was a bit better than the previous installment, On Stranger Tides, the series felt stagnant after reaching a natural conclusion. The film also earned significantly less money, suggesting audiences were losing interest in Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. This was potentially reflected in Depp’s own performance, as he reportedly received his lines through an earpiece. This marked what seemed to be his final adventure as the pirate. However, a year later, public attention shifted to the highly publicized legal battle between Depp and Amber Heard, ultimately leading to his departure from the Fantastic Beasts franchise in 2020. But in June 2022, Depp won his defamation case against Heard, opening the door for a potential career resurgence for the actor, known for roles in films like Sleepy Hollow.
Although Johnny Depp hasn’t had many major roles since 2022, 2026 looks promising. He’s starring in Marc Webb’s action thriller, Day Drinker, his first studio film in years, but the biggest opportunity could be Ti West’s upcoming Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. If this film is successful, it might pave the way for Depp to reprise his iconic role as Jack Sparrow.
Why a Sixth Depp Pirates Movie Now Seems More Likely

Two horror directors are currently working on adaptations of A Christmas Carol. One is directed by West, and the other comes from Robert Eggers, who recently directed Nosferatu. While details are still emerging, the West-Depp version is expected to include elements of the horror genre, and Eggers’ adaptation is also likely to lean into darker themes.
Because A Christmas Carol has been adapted so many times, a horror-focused take could make this new version unique, especially compared to well-known adaptations like the 2009 Jim Carrey film. Plus, the director is skilled at making films with smaller budgets, which could be a smart move for Johnny Depp, potentially giving him a much-needed success.
If Disney’s new film, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, is successful, it could revive Johnny Depp’s status as a reliable box office draw. Aside from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, his last major hit was Alice in Wonderland back in 2010. While films like Rango, The Tourist, and Black Mass performed decently, movies such as The Rum Diary, Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, Transcendence, Mortdecai, and Alice Through the Looking Glass weren’t as successful. More recently, he’s appeared in smaller, independent films like The Professor, Waiting for the Barbarians, Minamata, and Jeanne du Barry.
As a film fan, I’m really seeing Ebenezer as a big opportunity for Johnny Depp to make a comeback as a major leading man. It’s a wait though – we won’t see if audiences are ready to welcome him back until November 13th of next year. If the film does well, I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney greenlights another huge Pirates of the Caribbean movie with a massive budget!
Whether Johnny Depp would return to the Pirates of the Caribbean films is ultimately his decision. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently mentioned he’s hoping for another film and that Depp hasn’t ruled out the possibility. It really depends on whether he finds the script compelling.
With Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbosa gone and Keira Knightley finished with big franchise movies, it’s unlikely most of the original Pirates of the Caribbean cast will return. While Orlando Bloom is open to reprising his role, his character, Will Turner, wouldn’t feel right without Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann. A sixth Pirates movie could still feature Johnny Depp, but it might also introduce a new lead – Margot Robbie has often been mentioned as a possibility. Depp could then effectively pass the baton – and Jack the monkey, if he’s still around – to this new face of the franchise.
