It looks like imitation isn’t always the greatest form of flattery for Kim Carnes.
Following JoJo Siwa’s release of her version of the 1981 classic “Bette Davis Eyes”, it appears that the Grammy-winning artist subtly voiced her disapproval through a mysterious statement.
In a now-removed TikTok post dated July 9th, Kim posted a vintage clip of herself performing her song “Bette Davis Eyes” in a black pantsuit and sunglasses, set against an empty warehouse backdrop. Accompanying the nostalgic video was a message from the 79-year-old about what makes a compelling vocal performance.
Kim commented, “There’s a distinction between simply singing a tune… And truly living it… I’ve always felt that sincerity is what keeps music enduring.
She added, “I’m forever grateful to be the voice behind this one….. Bette Davis Eyes.”
Meanwhile, Kim hasn’t explicitly stated if her remarks were aimed at JoJo, but they surfaced only two days following when JoJo, the former Dance Moms star, posted a teaser video of herself singing “Bette Davis Eyes,” which soon became popular online.
On July 7th, TikTok saw JoJo embody the iconic film character with her short curly hairstyle and her performance of the song “She knows just what it takes to make a pro blush / All the boys think she’s a spy, she’s got Bette Davis eyes.” This suggests she was channeling Bette Davis.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement when our beloved 22-year-old artist subtly teased us with the promise that the rendition of the timeless classic track we witnessed during her concert earlier this year won’t be the final time we hear her voice on it. In a delightful twist, she even switched up the lyrics to “Chris Hughes’ eyes” – a nod to her beau that left us swooning!
Having played this song live and receiving such a wonderful reaction, I chose to lay down a studio vocal for it. I’m still unsure if I should make it available on Spotify, but I’d love to know your thoughts – would you like me to share it?” (JoJo’s caption in her own words)
However, beyond the well-known track “Bette Davis Eyes,” JoJo has more musical surprises up her sleeve. As early as March, the former contestant of “Celebrity Big Brother UK” (where she met Chris), suggested that she had numerous songs ready for release in 2025.
As I shared with TopMob News previously, this year promises to bring a substantial collection of fresh tunes from me, which I liken to putting together a whole playlist filled with my latest compositions.
She expressed her current state by saying, “I’m ready to move forward!” She also mentioned her desire to produce music and continue on this path.
