This spring, fans of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure got exciting news when it was announced that the much-anticipated storyline, Steel Ball Run, would be made into an anime. Often hailed as one of the franchise’s finest works by mangaka Hirohiko Araki, this upcoming arc has been keeping fans on edge with only a few details being shared so far. Fortunately, the creators behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure have been gearing up for Anime Expo 2023, as they recently showcased a sneak peek of the upcoming chapter featuring Johnny Joestar. The team working on the series has given fans a glimpse into their process by revealing some behind-the-scenes footage.
At the thrilling gathering, several beloved Joestar characters were present, including voice actors Kira Buckland, Keith Silverstein, and Mike Lauer, who portray Jolyne (from Stone Ocean), Speedwagon (Phantom Blood), and Abbachio (Golden Wind) in the English version. Not just the voice actors had something to share; the creative team behind the series is also visible below, and even the live stream featured special messages from the creators. Although anime enthusiasts might have been disappointed that a new trailer didn’t premiere during the panel, they were excited about an upcoming event set for September 23rd. You can find details on both announcements made at this year’s Anime Expo in the live stream below.

What is The Steel Ball Run Anyway?
Similar to other tales within the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, Steel Ball Run revolves around a fresh Joestar character and an outlandish plot twist. But unlike its predecessors, this storyline centers on a horse race happening in 1890. This unique setting provides a backdrop for thrilling action as Stand fights frequently occur while the contestants are riding horses. Characters must skillfully balance their efforts to win battles with maintaining control over their horses due to the constant fighting. It’s worth noting that there’s a particular motive behind the horse riders participating in this race.
The creator of Steel Ball Run has pledged that the winner will receive whatever their heart desires, a positive development for main character Johnny Joestar. Due to injuries sustained during his days as a jockey, Johnny is now wheelchair-bound, but he’s facing challenges beyond what he anticipated. Fortunately, he isn’t alone; Gyro Zeppelli, a new ally, has joined the cast, adding an interesting twist to the mix of characters that are both familiar and distinct from what Johnny has known before.
After the conclusion of Stone Ocean, the world within JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure underwent a transformation. The malevolent Pucci utilized his immense power to reshape reality, but fortunately, he was thwarted through a combination of divine intervention and sheer luck. Taking advantage of this opportunity for fresh beginnings, creator Hirohiko Araki crafted an entirely new universe, which has since expanded the series with manga stories like JoJolion and The JoJoLands. Although it may be some time before we get to explore the latter, Steel Ball Run promises plenty of exhilarating Stand battles to tide fans over.
