Fans of the manga “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run” have eagerly anticipated its anime adaptation for years, and even though it took a while to develop, it still promises an exhilarating experience. Although the seventh part of the series holds immense potential to be the best in the entire franchise due to its exceptional storytelling and action sequences, there are certain hurdles associated with the anime adaptation. The director of the series has already disclosed the issue at hand and shared their strategy for overcoming it to ensure an outstanding final product.
In an alternate 1890, the Steel Ball Run is a long and challenging cross-country horse race from San Diego to New York City, organized by philanthropist Stephen Steel to reignite America’s pioneering spirit. With a massive $50 million prize, this event draws competitors from all over the world. Johnny Joestar, a disillusioned former jockey who is now confined to a wheelchair, finds renewed hope through Gyro Zeppeli, an enigmatic racer who can make steel balls spin and grant temporary mobility to Johnny. Driven by his curiosity about Gyro’s abilities, Johnny decides to participate in the race. However, as he delves deeper into the competition, he begins to realize that there is more at stake than just a secret; the fate of a sacred corpse, a dangerous conspiracy involving the U.S. President, and possibly even his own life are all on the line.
Part 7’s Horses Prove a Difficult Task to Animate
Although it may seem unusual, the idea fits well considering the story revolves around a nationwide horse race, making horses essential characters and visual elements. Araki’s portrayal of these equines in part 7 was truly breathtaking and added to the overall appeal. However, creating countless frames of various horses in motion is an arduous task that requires a significant amount of time. Moreover, given that horses are more challenging to draw than humans due to size differences and other factors, additional difficulties arise. While it might have been feasible in manga format, translating them into animation isn’t as simple as one may think.
Initially taken aback and perplexed by the challenge of animating the horses, Toshiyuki Kato, the director, found it seemingly impossible when he initially read the manga. However, during a panel at Anime Expo’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure event in 2025, which ComicBook’s team attended, Kato admitted that there would be much experimentation and trial and error to bring these horses to life. Despite the difficulties, he emphasized their pursuit of the best possible outcome, stating candidly, “In essence, animating the horses will prove to be the most challenging aspect.
In simpler terms, Kato went on to comment, “After reading the original manga, I initially found the sequences too complex. However, the animation team for the last six parts of ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ did an exceptional job, creating breathtaking visuals despite the challenges. Yet, they never took the easy route and continued to push boundaries in Part 7. Kato concluded by stating that while adapting it into TV animation was a complex process with numerous trials and errors, their goal from the start had been to present it in the best possible form for today’s standards.
CGI Horses Are Still a Very Real Possibility
In many instances throughout the “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” animated series, computer-generated imagery (CGI) has been utilized for the animation. This includes the stunning and seamless opening themes, as well as specific scenes involving the characters’ Stand abilities. Since creating traditional 2D animations of horses can be quite laborious, CGI is often used to aid in this process.
Although it may cause some apprehension, the team has repeatedly demonstrated their proficiency in 3D animation, so if they have sufficient time, the horses could turn out wonderfully. However, this is all speculation, as we won’t know the direction the team ultimately takes until a trailer is released and fans can catch a sneak peek of Johnny and Gyro’s journey across the country, which has been eagerly anticipated.
