Jon Bernthal Makes Big Screen Punisher Debut in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Trailer

The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, is generating a lot of excitement as a standout superhero film. Beyond Spider-Man’s return, the movie boasts a strong cast featuring both new faces to the MCU and established characters who haven’t previously appeared alongside Spider-Man. Notably, Mark Ruffalo will make his first appearance in a Spider-Man movie as Bruce Banner, and Michael Mando reprises his role as Mac Gargan, continuing his transformation into the Scorpion.

Jon Bernthal is joining the cast, making this his fifth appearance as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including a planned Disney+ special in 2026). Fans are eager to see how this dark and intense character will interact with Spider-Man, and Bernthal’s involvement represents a significant milestone for the Punisher in Marvel’s film legacy.

Jon Bernthal is back as the Punisher in the new Spider-Man film, marking his first appearance in a movie since 2008. The last time we saw the Punisher on the big screen was in Punisher: War Zone, starring the late Ray Stevenson. Before that, the character was portrayed by Thomas Jane in The Punisher (2004) and Dolph Lundgren in The Punisher (1989), making Bernthal’s appearance the fourth theatrical film featuring the vigilante.

After the trailer was released, fans online immediately began discussing the Punisher’s appearance in Brand New Day. Many, like @captaincupkick, are already captivated by the chemistry between Peter and Frank, calling their interaction “surreal.” @TeeCeeComics praised the natural flow of their dynamic, predicting it will generate a lot of buzz. One memorable scene, where Spider-Man webs Frank’s mouth shut before he can swear, particularly resonated with viewers, like @SchwayJohn, who appreciated it as a clever nod to the former Netflix Marvel shows.

Bringing Jon Bernthal back as the Punisher would create a fascinating new challenge for Spider-Man. He’s never faced anyone quite like Frank Castle, who’s known for being incredibly ruthless and violent. The Punisher is one of the MCU’s most brutal fighters, equipped with a vast arsenal and willing to do whatever it takes to win – even if it means delivering a severe beating and making sure his enemies know it. This would definitely shake up Spider-Man’s world.

Spider-Man, known for his sincere and compassionate approach to fighting crime, will likely clash with Frank’s brutal tactics. However, this won’t stop Spider-Man from acting according to his principles, as demonstrated when he restrained Frank by webbing his mouth shut and leaving him in the street.

Although Frank appears briefly in the trailer, it’s unclear how important he’ll be to the overall story. However, he’s likely to significantly influence the main character and could even teach him new fighting techniques as they face numerous enemies in the film.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will swing into theaters on Jul. 31, 2026.
