As a huge Punisher fan, I have to say Jon Bernthal just delivered the news we’ve all been hoping for regarding his potential appearance in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day! It’s the best possible update, and honestly, I’m getting really excited about what this could mean.
Jon Bernthal first played Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, in season two of the Netflix series Daredevil. The character proved popular enough for Netflix to create its own Punisher series, which lasted for two seasons. After that show ended, Bernthal didn’t reprise the role until Daredevil: Born Again, which debuted on Disney+ in March 2025.
Because previous Marvel shows featuring Daredevil and The Punisher weren’t afraid to tackle mature themes with a TV-MA rating, some fans feared Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be toned down to fit a more family-friendly PG-13 rating.
Jon Bernthal recently told Screen Rant that he collaborated with the Spider-Man creative team to ensure his portrayal of The Punisher maintained the darker, more mature tone fans expect from the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What did Jon Benthal say about Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Jon Bernthal, discussing his return as The Punisher in a PG-13 Marvel Cinematic Universe project, told Screen Rant that the upcoming special will be a very intense and action-packed portrayal of the character. He emphasized that he, the director Destin Daniel Cretton, and Tom Holland all agreed it was crucial that the Punisher seen in Spider-Man could seamlessly transition into this standalone special, and he believes they successfully created that consistency.

Jon Bernthal is reportedly preparing to reprise his role as The Punisher in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Fans are excited about the possibility of seeing Frank Castle join the MCU, especially given Bernthal’s previous portrayal of the character and connections to Spider-Man storylines. Details suggest the project is being developed with the involvement of director Destin Daniel Cretton.

The Punisher special, expected in February 2025, was co-written by Jon Bernthal and Reinaldo Marcus Green, who also directed it. While the story is currently being kept secret, it will happen after the first season of the Born Again series.
According to Jon Bernthal, the Punisher series is expected to premiere on Disney+ around the same time as the new Spider-Man movie, “Brand New Day,” which is scheduled for release on July 31, 2026.
