Jonathan Frakes & Brent Spiner Launch Star Trek Podcast: Dropping Names

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner, famous for their roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation, are teaming up again in a new project. This pairing finally gives The Next Generation a similar dynamic to what other Star Trek series have enjoyed. Frakes and Spiner have worked together since 1987, playing Commander Will Riker and Lt. Commander Data, and most recently appeared together in the third season of Star Trek: Picard.

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner are starting a new podcast titled Dropping Names… And Other Things (also called Dropping Names With Brent and Jonny). Each week, the podcast will feature an interview with a guest who will share the story of meeting someone who first sparked their fandom. While the exact release date is still to come, you can find a website with links to all the major podcast platforms.

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner’s podcast, Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny, isn’t solely focused on Star Trek, but they will feature guests and stories from the franchise, acknowledging their long history with the show – nearly 40 years spent saving the galaxy on the Starship Enterprise. Their first guest will be a familiar face: LeVar Burton, their co-star from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Jonathan Frakes & Brent Spiner’s New Podcast Makes TNG Equal To Other Star Trek Shows

Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes are launching a podcast called Dropping Names… And Other Things, giving fans a chance to hear directly from two iconic stars of Star Trek: The Next Generation. This follows a trend of other Star Trek series – Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise – each having their own podcasts hosted by members of their original casts.

In 2019, Aron Eisenberg and Cirroc Lofton started a podcast called The 7th Rule where they discussed episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, along with producer and host Ryan T. Husk. After Eisenberg’s passing in September 2019, Lofton and Husk kept the podcast going, inviting many guest stars to join them in reviewing DS9.

Following their coverage of DS9, the podcast The 7th Rule broadened its scope to include Star Trek: The Next Generation, welcoming Denise Crosby during its first season. They also started reviewing episodes of the original Star Trek series, with Walter Koenig sharing his memories of the show.

As a longtime Trek fan, I’ve been loving what Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill have been up to with their podcast, The Delta Flyers. They started back in 2020 by revisiting every single episode of Star Trek: Voyager, which was a blast. And just recently, in 2023, they finished Voyager and jumped right into Deep Space Nine – and they’ve even added Terry Farrell and Armin Shimerman to the mix! It’s a fantastic deep dive for any Trekker.

Actors Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating, known for their roles in Star Trek: Enterprise, launched a podcast in 2022 called The Shuttlepod Show. It was rebranded as The D-Con Chamber in 2024. The podcast initially featured interviews with Star Trek stars and other celebrities, but it also began revisiting Star Trek: Enterprise, recently completing a review of its first season.

In 2021, The Nacelle Company and Gates McFadden from Star Trek: The Next Generation launched the podcast InvestiGates, featuring interviews with Star Trek celebrities. It ran for three seasons. Now, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner are joining the trend of TNG actors co-hosting podcasts, though their show doesn’t focus on revisiting their old episodes.

Star Trek Podcasts Let Fans Revel In Their Love For Classic Shows

As a lifelong Trekkie, I’m absolutely loving all these podcasts hosted by the actors themselves! It’s amazing to hear them reminisce about the shows. And even with Star Trek constantly evolving on Paramount+, the passion for the original series from the ’60s and The Next Generation from the ’90s hasn’t faded at all. If anything, it’s gotten stronger. It’s a real treat for those of us who grew up with those shows, and it’s awesome to see new fans discovering them too – it really defines what Star Trek means to so many of us.

Having LeVar Burton as the first guest on the podcast Dropping Names… And Other Things will almost certainly lead Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner to reminisce about Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard. They’ll likely share both new stories and the classic, funny anecdotes fans have enjoyed at Star Trek conventions for years. This pairing completes a lineup where every major Star Trek series from the 1990s and 2000s is now represented by two of its most beloved actors.

A growing number of Star Trek fans are creating their own podcasts to discuss and share their love for the show – and sometimes, to voice their complaints! Podcasts such as Open Pike Night, Strange New Pod, The Transporter Room, Crusher Convo, and Trekommendations have built a large online community where fans can connect and celebrate Star Trek together.

The familiar and fun dynamic between Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner will likely make their podcast, Dropping Names… And Other Things, stand out from other Star Trek podcasts. Given the continued love for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny is sure to be popular with Star Trek enthusiasts.
