Jordan Peele’s New Movie Sets Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Record

For almost ten years, Jordan Peele has been known for making excellent films. He burst onto the scene with his first movie, *Get Out*, which won an Oscar and was recently called the best horror film of the 21st century by *The New York Times*. Since then, he’s directed and produced other successful projects like *Us*, *Nope*, and the 2021 film *Candyman*, solidifying his reputation as a truly original and talented filmmaker. His involvement instantly adds weight to any project, so there were high hopes for his latest producing venture, *Him*, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations.

Currently, the film *Him* has a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 47 critic reviews. This makes it Jordan Peele’s lowest-rated movie to date. It’s only the second project Peele has been involved with to receive a negative score on the site – the first was the 2012 comedy *Wanderlust*, where he played a character named Rodney. *Him* is also the only film Peele has directed with a score lower than 72%.

Can Him Overcome Negative Reviews at the Box Office?

2025 has been a fantastic year for horror movies, with films like *Sinners*, *Final Destination Bloodlines*, *Weapons*, and *The Conjuring: Last Rites* performing better than expected at the box office. Positive word-of-mouth was a major factor in their success. Original films like *Sinners* and *Weapons* especially benefited, earning widespread praise and attracting both horror fans and general audiences. However, *Him* isn’t expected to see the same kind of boost when it’s released.

While Marlon Wayans’ performance as a football quarterback has received some praise, most critics find the film *Him* to be disorganized and ultimately unsuccessful. The movie, which explores obsession and hero worship surrounding a young athlete, had a promising concept. However, it doesn’t delve deeply enough into these themes, unlike other films by the director. Given the current competition, negative reviews could significantly impact its box office performance.

Lots of horror and thriller movies have come out recently, making it hard for any single film to stand out. Even a movie based on a Stephen King story is facing a tough battle to get noticed. While positive buzz around the film *Him* could have drawn audiences with Jordan Peele’s name attached, it’s now likely to get lost in the mix. Luckily, *Him* didn’t cost much to make-just $27 million-so it doesn’t need to be a huge blockbuster to earn a profit. A solid opening weekend should be enough to put it in a reasonable position. However, the reviews suggest it probably won’t become a massive hit, particularly with several bigger movies scheduled for release this fall.

Despite a successful year for the horror genre, Jordan Peele’s production company, Monkeypaw, has faced some challenges. They lost out on the script for the film *Weapons*, which went on to become a hit for Warner Bros. Additionally, Peele’s next movie as a director has been delayed by Universal Studios to allow for further development. *Him*, intended to be a strong release in 2025, didn’t perform as expected. Hopefully, Peele’s future projects will be more successful and get him back on track.
