Lately, Hollywood has prospered by revisiting classic films, either through remakes or follow-ups. Movies like “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” in cinemas and “Happy Gilmore 2” on Netflix are examples of this trend. It’s no wonder fans keep asking about a sequel to one of the most cherished ’80s movies, “The Goonies”. In a chat with Entertainment Tonight, actor Josh Brolin, who portrayed Brandon Walsh in the original film, has shown interest but also mentioned that several potential scripts have been rejected.
Josh Brolin, the well-known actor, has shared some ambivalent feelings about a possible follow-up to “The Goonies”. Although not completely dismissing the idea, he hopes it will materialize due to the fantastic memories associated with the first film. However, he also voiced concerns that a sequel might spoil the original. The key factor lies in Steven Spielberg, the original producer and co-writer, who has yet to approve any of the five scripts over the years. Spielberg’s meticulousness is understandable given his discerning taste.
Brolin also voiced his doubts about the feasibility of a Goonies sequel, pointing out that bridging the significant time gap between the initial movie and a potential follow-up could prove tricky. “It’s as if we just released another one, and then the Goonies got older, started using walkers, and then tumbled off a cliff because their vision wasn’t so great anymore. I can’t help but wonder, what are you supposed to do about that? I’m not sure.
Will The Goonies 2 Ever Happen?
Since its release in 1985, the beloved film The Goonies has maintained its status as a cult favorite, with merchandise continuously produced and marketed even today. Directed by Richard Donner from a script penned by Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, the movie follows a band of unconventional youths known as The Goonies who stumble upon an old map leading them on a thrilling quest to unearth the long-lost treasure of a legendary pirate. Key cast members include Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, and John Matuszak.
The movie The Goonies was made on a budget of only $19 million and turned out to be a massive box office success back then, earning $64.66 million globally. In 2017, The Goonies was included in the National Film Registry due to its cultural and historical importance. Recently, it was disclosed that Potsy Ponciroli would write the script for the sequel, which is almost forty years after the original film’s release. Furthermore, it was mentioned that Steven Spielberg will likely return as a producer. Since the announcement in February, no additional details have been shared, indicating that the project is probably still in its initial stages of development.
Enthusiasts of the film “The Goonies” have the opportunity to watch it online, as it’s now available for streaming on both Netflix and Tubi. For individuals who prefer a more tangible experience, they can buy a Blu-ray or DVD version of “The Goonies” at any retailer where movies are sold.
