The first trailer for 20th Century Studios’ new movie, Whalefall, starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, dropped on June 9th, giving viewers a preview of the terrifying events to come. The trailer starts with Jay Gardiner (Abrams) setting out to recover the body of his father, Mitt (Brolin). However, things quickly become horrifying when Jay is completely engulfed by a sperm whale.
What Whalefall Will Bring to the Silver Screen Later This Year
Brian Duffield directed Whalefall, adapting the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, who originally wrote the 2023 novel the film is based on. The movie generated significant buzz even before the book was released.
Similar to the novel, the film tells the story of a man’s father, from his life through to his death, and the difficult situation he faces while attempting to retrieve his father’s body. The film Whalefall features Elisabeth Shue as Jay’s mother, Zara, alongside John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd, along with actors Abrams and Brolin.
When it first came out, Kraus’s novel was very popular, receiving almost entirely positive reviews from both critics and readers. Currently, it has a rating of 3.68 out of 5 on Goodreads, based on over 32,000 ratings and 6,000 reviews.
The description for the book Whalefall tells the story of Jay, a diver whose expedition takes a terrifying turn when a giant squid and then a sperm whale appear. He’s quickly caught in the squid’s grasp and pulled into the whale’s mouth, ending up in its stomach. With only an hour of oxygen left, Jay must overcome his inner struggles and find a way to escape from inside the whale.
What’s Next for the Stars of Whalefall?
I’m really excited for Whalefall! I just learned that Mason Abrams will be playing Bryan, a medical courier who gets caught up in the story from the classic Resident Evil 2. And it’s awesome that other familiar faces like Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson, and Paul Walter Hauser from the Resident Evil series are joining him too!
Josh Brolin is returning to the big screen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three after appearing in Whalefall. He’ll once again play the character Gurney Halleck. The film also stars returning favorites Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Zendaya as Chani. Completing the main cast are Florence Pugh, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem.
Whalefall is currently slated to arrive in theaters on October 16.
