Ken Levine, creative director at Ghost Story Games, has given an update on “Judas,” their single-player, narrative-driven first-person shooter, via the PlayStation Blog. This includes fresh key artwork, information about the “Villainy” system that allows allies to become enemies based on player decisions, and a commitment to more frequent developer updates.
Get the details below.
Apologies for the brief silence! Creating promotional content such as trailers demands considerable time and resources, and right now, we’re directing those toward finalizing our project named Judas.
Additionally, we long for the times when our connection with you, the player, was more personal. Thus, we contemplated, “What if we began sharing developer logs?
Via these channels, we aim to keep you informed about our progress more frequently without revealing too many spoilers from the upcoming project, Judas. Our intention is to maintain a low-key approach, meaning regular updates that may not always include high-quality trailers or polished final visuals. However, do expect some of those as well!
Feature Update: Villainy
We’ve achieved a significant development: Characterizing Villainy. In our upcoming game, Judas, villainy plays a crucial role. Characters like Fontaine and Comstock in games such as BioShock and BioShock Infinite are consistently portrayed as antagonists. However, in Judas, the players will interact with key figures from what we call the Big 3. As you foster friendships with these characters, one of them could potentially turn against you if neglected. Once transformed into a villain, they’ll gain additional powers that may thwart your actions and objectives. The following clips offer a glimpse of this feature in action.
This is simply one possible reaction from the Big 3, but I’m saving the more threatening and tailored strategies for later.
Ultimately, it’s important to choose who you will invest your efforts into… and there may be individuals whom, unintentionally or not, you may end up distancing.

A Focus on Character
Among my all-time favorites is the game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, which I adore for its unique gameplay dynamics provided by the Nemesis System. This innovative feature allows for the creation of miniature relationships with numerous orcs, although it’s important to note that their objectives differ from ours due to the vast array of orcs and limited time available to transform them into characters.
In the game “Judas”, you’ll form a deep connection with each character. The loss of one will stir feelings similar to losing a friend. We aim to create tension by making your decision about which character to trust extremely challenging. The main trio will vie for your loyalty and attention, using various tactics such as offering bribes, saving you in battles, backstabbing other characters, and revealing hidden secrets. However, ultimately, it’s up to you to discern who is trustworthy and who isn’t.
In BioShock Infinite, significant effort was put into building your connection with Elizabeth. By the game’s conclusion, you were well-acquainted with various aspects of her character, including her powers, aspirations, and desires.
However, it’s important to note that she was largely unaware of your gaming persona, specifically Booker. In the game Judas, an elite trio known as The Big 3 closely watched your gameplay, paying particular attention not only to your tactics in combat, hacking, and crafting, but more crucially, your interpersonal interactions with the other characters.
In our progress towards the Villainy Milestone, we recently conducted the largest playtest for what we’ve dubbed our “Judas” feature, offering new players a hands-on introduction to this aspect of the game. Each time we run these tests, we gain invaluable insights, and we relish the opportunity to apply that knowledge when developing our creation. The testers generously provided us with numerous constructive comments on decision weighting and its influence on results, their curiosity about character motivations, and how interactions involving the Big 3 affected-or influenced-their subsequent choices.
Another thing we’re excited to be able to share is… this:
We’re thrilled to finally unveil this masterpiece! I’ve always been a great admirer of Drew Struzan’s artwork and the movie poster era he symbolizes. The aesthetic fits perfectly for films featuring large ensembles, such as Star Wars. And Judas, like many other productions, boasts an extensive cast beyond the leads. In fact, there are likely to be over a hundred speaking roles in this game… Take a closer look and you might notice some intriguing details that could pique your curiosity. Rest assured, everything included here is meaningful. However, there are certain aspects of this game that we’re not prepared to discuss just yet.
There’s one thing we’re sure you all want to know: when is Judas coming out?!?!
Although we’d love to provide an exact release date now, we’re still fine-tuning some aspects of it. We don’t want to set a date only to potentially need to adjust it later, which could cause unnecessary confusion. However, we’re eager for you to experience Judas, and the whole team is putting in their best efforts every day to make that happen as soon as possible.
Judas will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
