Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Recommends New Series By Season 2 Animator: “I’m Completely Outclassed”

Gege Akutami’s manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump, became incredibly popular after the anime adaptation by the studio MAPPA. The anime, which premiered in 2020, quickly gained a large following due to its exciting action sequences, beautiful animation, compelling music, and captivating story. Since the anime’s release, the series has become one of the best-selling manga of all time, with over 100 million copies sold globally. The anime’s success is largely thanks to the dedication and skill of the animation team, who worked tirelessly to deliver a high-quality product under demanding time constraints.

Nakaya Onsen has been an animator on the anime since its beginning and even designed a cursed spirit for the prequel movie. He was also a key animator for Season 2, Episode 16, which is known for its incredible visuals and excitement. Although his manga, Phenomenon X: Paranormal Crime Files, isn’t widely known internationally, the anime creator, Akutami, recommended it to their fans. A translated version of Akutami’s original Japanese comment, shared on X by @Go_Jover, reads, “You’re great at anime, and your manga is interesting too—I’m completely blown away!”

Jujutsu Kaisen Animator Nakaya Onsen’s Manga Will Make Its English Debut in 2026

Besides working on Jujutsu Kaisen, Onsen has contributed to the Fate series produced by Ufotable and was a key animator for episode 11 of Season 2 of Mob Psycho by Madhouse. After many years as an animator and character designer, Onsen began creating their own manga, which Seven Seas Entertainment will publish in English in October 2026. While the specific date is still to be announced, Seven Seas Entertainment’s website confirms the first volume will be available in both print and digital formats.

This exciting manga blends crime and the supernatural, following an unlikely pair as they uncover the secrets behind strange events. From unexplained fires and wandering mummies to winter sunflowers, each case is a baffling mystery that hints at a deeper, more sinister threat.

The manga centers around Anan, a detective with cat ears who typically handles routine cases. Everything changes when she’s teamed up with Kanai, a federal agent hiding secrets. While it hasn’t been released in English yet, the second volume will be available in Japan on December 15, 2025. According to the author, Onsen, the new volume will be sold on Amazon Japan, Kadokawa, Rakuten, and Yodobashi, the same places where the first volume is currently available.
