Jujutsu Kaisen Director Reportedly Leaves MAPPA After Anime’s Success

I’ve been watching the rise of Jujutsu Kaisen, and it’s become incredibly popular, really quickly! It exploded in 2020 when MAPPA announced they were making an anime, and that helped the manga become a huge bestseller. The manga recently finished in 2024, but the anime still has a couple of story arcs to go before it catches up. Honestly, the story is fantastic on its own, but the anime definitely played a big role in making it so well-known. The first season was directed by Sunghoo Park, who’s a really respected name in anime, and people still talk about how great his work was.

The first season of the series was praised for its incredible fight scenes, typical of the Shonen genre. But the second season saw a complete overhaul in visuals and art style when Shota Goshozono took over. This change followed Sunghoo Park’s departure from MAPPA after season one, as he founded his own studio, E&H Production. Now, rumors are circulating that another director with experience on Jujutsu Kaisen may also be leaving MAPPA, suggesting further staff changes.

Jujutsu Kaisen Director Shota Ghoshozono Reportedly Won’t Complete The Culling Game Arc

Since taking over as director in Season 2, Goshozono has led the anime to even greater success than its first season. Early in his career, in 2019, he contributed key animation to Mob Psycho 100 and later worked on Episode 8 of the first season of this series. Becoming series director for the first time came with high expectations, given the show’s already established popularity. He returned to direct Season 3 Part 1, and fans anticipated he would continue adapting the complete story.

A rumor is spreading on social media that the director of Jujutsu Kaisen will leave the studio after the current cour finishes. While there’s no official word yet, many fans are discussing this potential change in the show’s staff. The information was shared by a usually reliable source, @Go_Jover on X, but they haven’t confirmed anything, only mentioning the rumors. It’s believed the director may be moving to a different studio after their contract with MAPPA ends. Until MAPPA releases an official statement, it’s best to view these reports as unconfirmed.

The first half of Season 3 will finish in March, and will probably give us details about what happens next in the Culling Game Arc. We’ll find out who’s directing the second half eventually, but nothing is confirmed yet. Although a different director is likely for Part 2, the anime’s overall quality won’t suffer – any changes in the way scenes are planned shouldn’t be too noticeable. Jujutsu Kaisen is MAPPA’s biggest hit, and the studio is committed to maintaining the high animation standards fans expect, especially since the show is known for having some of the best-looking episodes in anime.
