Jujutsu Kaisen Epilogue Unpacks How Sukuna Met His Closest Ally

As an avid manga enthusiast with decades of reading experience under my belt, I must say that the finale of Jujutsu Kaisen has left me both satisfied and curious. The epic battle against Sukuna was a thrilling conclusion to the series, but it also leaves us with several unanswered questions, such as the relationship between Sukuna and Uraume.

On December 25th, 2024, the final volumes 29 and 30 of Jujutsu Kaisen were published in Japanese. It’s going to take a few months for these volumes to be translated into English versions worldwide. The manga series wrapped up its storyline in September 2024, marking Sukuna’s defeat as the climax. The battle against the King of Curses was intense and devastating, leading to the demise of cherished characters like Satoru Gojo and Choso. Despite their losses, the sorcerers ultimately managed to vanquish Sukuna, inflicting one defeat after another upon him.

The manga ends with several questions left unanswered, among them the fate of Sukuna and Uraume. A secondary villain in the story, Uraume engaged in combat with Kinji Hakari during the assault against Sukuna. Uraume aimed to overpower Hakari and aid Sukuna, yet they remained evenly matched, neither showing any signs of defeat. There was a unique connection between Sukuna and Uraume that transcended the typical master-servant dynamic. They initially encountered each other during the Heian Era, and we are given insight into the cause behind Uraume’s unwavering allegiance to Sukuna in this final chapter.

The Jujutsu Kaisen Final Epilogue Features Brief Heian Era Flashback

In the thrilling world of Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 30, I’m delving into an intriguing 16-page epilogue that revolves around four captivating characters. The tale unfolds with Sukuna, wandering aimlessly, stumbling upon a chilled child close to two lifeless bodies. As if the scene weren’t chilling enough, Uraume—the “Frozen Star,” a formidable sorcerer—stands motionless in the icy surroundings. The area is unnaturally cold, so cold that it claimed the lives of even the child’s parents due to the frigid emanations from their bodies. This epilogue promises a deep dive into Uraume’s haunting past and the chilling powers that earned him his moniker.

During the Heian Era, they rarely managed to master their abilities. Accompanied by Uraume, Sukuna admits that he inadvertently destroyed his ice storage facility (an early refrigerator designed for year-round ice preservation). He delegates the duty of guarding his meat to Uraume, ensuring it doesn’t spoil.

After all, Uraume’s powers can keep the meat fresh. Not to mention Uraume is a talented cook. Sukuna’s interest is piqued and he asks if Uraume can butcher humans. The series has often mentioned that Sukuna is a cannibal. However, Uraume is only surprised by the fact that Sukuna doesn’t get cold in their presence. The King of Curses asks the child the same question as they walk away holding hands, just like in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 271.

What Happens to Uraume in Jujutsu Kaisen?

In a manner reminiscent to how Sukuna was reborn with Yuji’s assistance, Kenjaku employs a human as a conduit for the resurrection of Uraume. Post-resurrection, Uraume and Sukuna meet again in Shibuya, with Uraume resuming their role as an ally to Sukuna. Up until this point in the narrative, Uraume has only been depicted as aiding Sukuna. During the raid, they attempted to assist Sukuna but were hindered by Kinji Hakari. Their ensuing confrontation extended throughout the entirety of the Sukuna raid until Uraume utilized their power to freeze their neck, ultimately leading to their self-decapitation.

Following his demise, Sukuna encounters Mahito in a spiritual corridor. The concluding chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen presents a touching moment as Sukuna consoles a sobbing Uraume, who has transformed into a child. This interaction hints at a deeper connection between the two than initially perceived. Intriguingly, Uraume ends their existence upon learning about Sukuna’s fate. Sukuna’s speech and actions underscore his concern for his followers, transitioning to the afterlife with compassion.
