Jujutsu Kaisen Finally Reveals the Purpose of its Sequel (& YujI Fans Aren’t Gonna Like It)

For the past few months, Jujutsu Kaisen has continued with a new sequel series, and we’re now starting to understand the purpose behind it, especially with the return of Yuji Itadori. This new series, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, is created by the original author, Gege Akutami, with artwork by Yuji Iwasaki, who also worked on Cipher Academy. Set decades after the events of the first series, it shows how the world of Jujutsu Sorcery has evolved since Yuji and his friends defeated Sukuna. However, not all of these changes are positive.

The early chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo hinted at Yuji Itadori’s possible return, referencing his past actions. Now, the latest chapter confirms he’s still alive, even 70 years after the original series ended – a surprising reveal considering characters like Yuta and Maki have passed away. It appears the main goal of this sequel is to finally give Yuji the meaningful death he’s longed for.

What’s Going on With Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo?

Chapter 10 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo focuses on the higher-ups of the jujutsu sorcerer world debating how to handle the powerful Simurians. They ultimately decide to locate Yuji Itadori, hoping a demonstration of his strength will dissuade the Simurians. The sequel series hinted that Yuji became a legendary figure after his generation defeated Sukuna, and that he continued to fight and defeat Cursed Spirits and other sorcerers, becoming the strongest sorcerer currently active.

This conversation proves Yuji is currently the most powerful sorcerer and is still actively involved in events. Many fans suspected this when it was revealed Mahito was waiting for Yuji in a strange state, and wondered if Yuji had somehow survived to face him again. Now it appears Yuji might be trapped in a limbo-like existence, which is devastating considering his desire to live a normal life.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sequel Brings Yuji Back to Die

Yuji always wanted to die peacefully, a wish passed down from his grandfather. This desire may be connected to a curse, forcing him to remain alive until he can achieve that death. Alternatively, being reborn through Kenjaku could have altered something within him. Regardless, it appears the purpose of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is to bring Yuji back so he can finally find the peaceful death he’s been seeking.

The original series’ ending, while controversial, felt right at the time, but this sequel is showing that the problems in the Jujutsu world don’t simply end with Yuji’s story. It seems Yuji is destined to fight endlessly as the strongest, and his only escape might be death. A recent revelation introduces beings who can’t die naturally – they must be killed – and this could be the fate awaiting Yuji as well.
