Jujutsu Kaisen Sequel Finally Brings Back Yuji, But He Isn’t What Fans Expected

Since the continuation of Jujutsu Kaisen, called Modulo, started, fans have been hoping to see characters from the first series reappear. This is largely because many readers weren’t satisfied with the original ending and wanted more development for those characters. While Modulo showed what happened to some of them, revealing they’d aged as expected since the story takes place almost seven years later, a surprising detail about Yuji Itadori emerged: because of his unique situation as a Death Painting and Sukuna’s previous host, Yuji doesn’t age.

With the news that Yuji is still a powerful sorcerer – now considered the strongest – everyone eagerly awaited his return. As Yuka faced off against Dabura, a powerful alien sorcerer equal to Sukuna, it seemed certain Yuji would come back to save the sorcerers and humanity from the Simurians’ control. In Chapter 19 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, titled “Rapid Strides,” Yuji finally appears after a fierce battle between Dabura and Mahoraga, where Dabura learns about Reversed Cursed Energy and Mahoraga starts adapting to physical attacks. However, Yuji surprised fans by attacking both Simurians and humans without discrimination.

The Original Protagonist Returns in a Far More Complicated Role

The battle between Dabura and Mahoraga unleashed a wave of cursed energy, causing weaker curses to scatter from Tokyo. Sorcerers stepped in to deal with these fleeing curses. At the same time, the Simurians tried to stop anyone from interfering with the duel between Dabura and Yuka, leading to a fight inside an empty building. Just as both sides prepared to battle, Yuji arrived, claiming he’d predicted this situation, then immediately admitting he hadn’t actually said anything. He then unleashed a powerful attack, expecting it to only hit the Simurians and help the sorcerers, but it unexpectedly struck everyone present, friend and foe alike.

It’s now clear that Yuji isn’t going to simply fight alongside humans as many fans predicted, and his reasons are still a mystery. The way he’s acted in the latest part of the story, especially his connection to the Okkotsu family, shows he’s become much more morally ambiguous. While we don’t know what he’s planning, it’s obvious he won’t be helping humanity without conditions, implying that his perspective as a powerful sorcerer has become more critical and distant.

Yuji’s way of thinking seems to be shaped by what happened with Gojo Satoru, who was once the strongest sorcerer. People used to depend on Gojo to solve every problem without thinking about the long-term effects, and that ultimately led to disaster when Gojo was sealed, causing the country to fall. This situation is similar to what’s happening now with Yuji, who seems to be taking the law into his own hands and doesn’t always differentiate between humans and cursed spirits. However, it’s unclear why he’s getting involved in the first place. While his reasons are still a mystery, they will likely be revealed soon in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, proving that his role in this new story is much more complex than just being an experienced hero.
