The popular series *Jujutsu Kaisen* has returned with a surprising sequel called *Modulo*. This new story follows the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki as they confront a fresh danger: aliens! Despite the unexpected premise, *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* is already proving popular with fans, especially since the original manga concluded just last year.
The sequel is already showing strong potential, even bringing back a previously underdeveloped storyline from the *Jujutsu Kaisen* Culling Game Arc. This involves Kenjaku’s dealings with the U.S. government and the resulting military invasion of Japan, which forms the backdrop for *Modulo’s* story and the current political conflicts between Japan, America, and the Simurians. Though this plotline felt disconnected from the main story about Sukuna and Kenjaku in the original series and was never fully explained, *Modulo* is now exploring it in detail – and doing so in a very engaging way.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Revives the Original Series’ Abandoned Military Subplot
Fans often refer to this as the “military subplot.” It begins during the Culling Game Arc, in chapters 200 and 201, when Kenjaku informs the U.S. government about jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits. He tricks them into sending troops to Japan to capture both sorcerers and regular citizens for experiments, hoping to find a way to utilize the unique cursed energy possessed by the Japanese. The military conflict itself is relatively brief, spanning just a couple of chapters (209-210), and is quickly resolved by Yuji, Megumi, and their allies.
Sending soldiers into the Culling Game was obviously just a tactic to gather cursed energy for Kenjaku’s ultimate goal: merging humanity with Tengen. Since his plan never came to fruition, this storyline always felt incomplete and underdeveloped, leading many fans to believe the author didn’t have enough time to fully explore it.
I’ve been following the new *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* chapters, and it’s interesting to see how they’re continuing a storyline that was left hanging. The first chapter immediately throws you into a new development: the Simurians aren’t negotiating with the United States, but with Japan instead. As it turns out, this is because of a treaty Japan put in place six years after Sukuna’s defeat. This treaty essentially gave Japan control over all things paranormal, including handling diplomatic relations with extraterrestrial beings.
The first chapter of *Modulo* shows that people in Japan are still being illegally trafficked to exploit cursed energy – a result of Kenjaku’s plans. This, along with the Culling Game, likely led to the creation of a treaty designed to discourage other countries from getting involved in the world of jujutsu. The second chapter of *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* reveals even higher stakes: a single mistake when dealing with the Simurians could start a full-scale war, once again putting the fate of Japan – and the world – in the hands of teenagers, a common theme in this type of story.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is available to read on Manga Plus and Viz Media.
