The third season of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently being released, and the creator, Gege Akutami, made a quick, easy-to-miss appearance in the latest episode. The season started earlier this month with a special hour-long premiere, showcasing the high level of detail and quality MAPPA is bringing to this new installment. The first two episodes were excellent, especially considering they were adapted from the recent movie. But the quality really jumped with episode four, which focused on Maki and her powerful confrontation with the Zenin clan, suggesting this season will be even better than the ones before it.
After an episode this good, I was bracing myself for the next ones to be a little less impressive. But MAPPA really surprised me! They manage to make even episodes focused on building the world and backstory really captivating. And they included a really unexpected cameo – the author, Gege Akutami! He often portrays himself as a one-eyed cat in his manga, and fans will recognize that symbol. It’s a super quick appearance, easy to blink and miss, but it was a fun little detail.

I was watching Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Episode 5, “Passion,” and noticed something really cool. Right around the 12:52 mark, as they were introducing the fighters, there’s a guy in the background wearing a one-eyed cat mask. It turns out that mask is how the manga creator, Gege Akutami, represents himself! This little detail isn’t in the original manga; it’s something the animation studio, MAPPA, added just for the anime. It’s a fun easter egg that fans have been talking about, and it shows MAPPA isn’t just copying the manga, they’re actively trying to make the anime even better.
This episode isn’t alone in adding clever details. When Yuji and Megumi begin their fight, the first rule explained to them is a subtle nod to the iconic first rule from the movie Fight Club. Following last week’s visual references to Kill Bill, it’s clear the show is drawing inspiration from classic American action movies. Fans have also been buzzing about a uniquely filmed conversation between Hikari and Yuji, appreciating these thoughtful additions. Overall, these elements demonstrate that Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 is going above and beyond, elevating an already excellent anime with playful and creative touches.
