Gege Akutami’s *Jujutsu Kaisen* is a modern shonen series that does things differently, and it’s gained attention for breaking from tradition. However, this approach has also created some problems. Fans have often wondered if Itadori Yuji truly fits the role of the main hero, as he doesn’t follow the typical protagonist pattern. This issue isn’t limited to the hero; the series’ villain also feels unconventional. From the beginning, the story hinted that Kenjaku, who took over Suguru Geto, was meant to be the primary antagonist, with a long-term plan spanning centuries.
The story took some unexpected turns, and while these twists made Sukuna the primary villain of *Jujutsu Kaisen*, his background wasn’t fully developed. Although the series has some narrative weaknesses, the biggest problem is a lack of a clear, central storyline. Without a strong core plot, *Jujutsu Kaisen* became unbalanced, resulting in unresolved plot points and a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion, even with its serious themes.
Although the original *Jujutsu Kaisen* series has ended, the sequel, *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo*, appears to have resolved a key problem. By focusing on a clear storyline, the new series has captivated readers and made them eager to see what happens next.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Fixes the Original Series’ Narrative by Establishing a Central Plot
The new arc of *Jujutsu Kaisen*, called Modulo, starts with the arrival of aliens on Earth. These aliens, the Simurians, have powers like those of jujutsu sorcerers, but there are only 50,000 of them. Their main question is whether they can live peacefully with humans. This new storyline immediately solves a problem with the original series by giving it a clear, central plot. Because of this strong foundation, each new chapter now feels more connected to the overall story.
One major improvement in the new series is the strong connection developing between the main characters, Maru, an alien, and Tsurugi Okkotsu. Their shared goal of preventing war between humans and Simurians immediately gives them a clear direction. This is different from the original series, where the hero, Itadori Yuji, spent more time questioning his purpose. Also, the villains in this new story have much clearer motivations and roles.
While we don’t know for sure who the main villain will be – it could be Dabura, an incredibly powerful alien like Sukuna – it’s become clear that aliens will be the biggest threat. The conflict might even start because of Maru’s brother, Cross. Because the story’s direction and ultimate goal are well-defined, future events, like a possible confrontation between Maru and Tsurugi, could have a significant emotional impact.
The continuation of *Jujutsu Kaisen* addresses a key weakness of the first part by adding a focused storyline, and this new direction promises a more satisfying conclusion for viewers.
