For years, Marvel’s Avengers films were guaranteed blockbusters, bringing together all the most popular heroes to fight a major villain. The next installment, Avengers: Doomsday, will do the same, pitting Earth’s mightiest heroes against the classic villain Dr. Doom. However, Doomsday might not be as financially successful as previous Avengers movies, and it faces an increasingly competitive landscape at the box office.
Marvel’s biggest worry about how well Doomsday will perform in theaters is that it’s opening at the same time as Dune: Part Three, the final movie in the popular sci-fi series based on Frank Herbert’s novels. Both Disney (Marvel’s parent company) and Warner Bros. have been hesitant to change their December 18th release dates, even though the films are likely to appeal to many of the same viewers.
Those hoping for a “Barbenheimer” scenario are likely to wind up disappointed, as the stark contrast in tone and subject matter is a big part of why Barbie and Oppenheimer worked in tandem. Two die-hard franchise fanbases are unlikely to see such natural collaboration at the box office, and unfortunately for both Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, a third high-profile movie just made a release date change that could damage the prospects of both franchise juggernauts.
‘Jumanji 3’ Will Cut Into ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s Legs at the Box Office

The new Jumanji movie has moved its release date from December 11th to December 25th. Originally, it was set to come out a week before Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. This new date puts its release during the winter school break, which should help all three films attract viewers. However, because Jumanji is also aimed at younger audiences, it will likely compete with Doomsday for some of the same moviegoers.
The Jumanji series has proven it can successfully compete with even the biggest franchises. For example, 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle became a surprise hit despite opening only five days after Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Surprisingly, Jumanji quickly surpassed The Last Jedi to become the number one movie at the box office within just three weeks.
I remember when Jumanji: The Next Level came out – it was just a week before the new Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker. Everyone thought Star Wars would dominate, but Jumanji really surprised us all! It kept making money throughout the holidays and ended up with a huge $800 million worldwide. Star Wars, while still making over a billion dollars, felt a little disappointing to some, especially considering it was supposed to be the epic finale. I think Jumanji just connected with audiences in a really positive way, while the Star Wars sequels were a bit divisive. It’s clear Jumanji appeals to a broad audience, and that’s exactly the kind of audience the new Doomsday movie is hoping to reach.
Disney Still Has One Move To Make To Save ‘Doomsday’s Box Office Record Chances

Despite competition from Jumanji, Doomsday is still expected to easily surpass a billion dollars in total earnings. However, without access to IMAX theaters – those screens being reserved for Dune: Part Three – it’s very unlikely to break the record set by Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion worldwide), even with the exciting addition of the X-Men and the introduction of Dr. Doom. Disney could significantly improve Doomsday‘s chances by moving the release date to December 11th.
Moving the release date of the next Jumanji movie would give Avengers: Doomsday a week without competition before Dune: Part Three arrives, and two weeks before Jumanji itself. This timing, two weeks after Greta Gerwig’s Narnia likely performs very well over Thanksgiving, could be beneficial. While it might not reach the success of Endgame, a week with Doomsday as the sole focus of moviegoers could generate positive buzz, helping the film stay popular for weeks and potentially even break box office records.
