The Jurassic Park franchise has returned once more. After receiving unfavorable reviews for “Jurassic World Dominion” three years ago, the movie series carries on with an entirely fresh ensemble, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali in the leading roles.
The upcoming film, following the second trilogy, has strong ties not only with the rest of the series but also with the 1993 movie “Jurassic Park.” David Koepp, one of the original writers, collaborated with Michael Crichton on the script, and he recently shared that this new entry includes a scene from the original novel that was previously unable to be adapted in the 1993 version.
In the 1993 movie version, there was a deleted river raft scene featuring Sam Neill’s character, Alan Grant. This scene was inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel and showed Alan Grant using the river to travel towards the visitor center. During this journey, he encountered a Tyrannosaurus rex swimming in the river. Unfortunately, this scene didn’t make it into the original film due to budget constraints. However, they brought it back for the movie “Jurassic World Rebirth“.
The filmmaker shared that there’s a particular scene from the raft in the film which has given him an uncomfortable feeling similar to trying to suppress a sneeze for 32 years. He mentioned that during the making of the initial movie, he and Steven had discussed this scene. According to him, Steven might have even sketched it out, and it was included in the first draft of the script.
Nevertheless, Koepp went on to explain that “It needed to be abandoned as it didn’t align with the framework and definitely exceeded the budget. Moreover, in 1992, creating computer-generated water was extremely challenging. Just showing a T. Rex would have been groundbreaking, and there was doubt about whether we could even manage it. Needless to say, depicting a T. Rex swimming wasn’t an option from the start.
32 years on, technology made it possible: “It was incredibly fulfilling to include that moment. When I penned it for this film, it felt like I was simply capturing a scene straight from the book, as it’s a scene so perfectly crafted.” (Written in the first person perspective of a movie reviewer)
In addition to the raft scene, the Rebirth of Jurassic Park incorporated additional discarded content. One such scene includes a speech by Jonathan Bailey’s character, the paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, discussing humanity’s potential self-destruction. This poignant moment can be traced back to Michael Crichton’s original novels. However, these are just two instances of scenes adapted from the books in this latest installment of the franchise.
Koepp noted that the tone of the books he read was distinct from the tones he worked with in the first film and subsequent movies. He found it intriguing, as the author’s perspective seemed a bit darker. Reading the books helped him reacquaint himself with the meticulously researched science within them. Koepp admired the moment of genius in the books – the concept that DNA from fossilized mosquitoes could be extracted and animals recreated – it’s an exceptional, one-of-a-kind idea for a writer. He described the books as 800 pages filled with fantastic material.
Jurassic World Rebirth Is Off to a Great Start
Despite receiving a relatively low rating of 51% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie still managed to resonate with audiences, who gave it an approval rating of 72%.
Additionally, “Jurassic World Rebirth” made a splash in cinemas on July 2nd. In just two days, it managed to earn approximately $55.8 million from the domestic market. This seventh installment is projected to generate around $137.5 million over its five-day opening within the domestic market, which would be quite impressive given its production budget of $180 million.
Jurassic World Rebirth is out in theaters.
