Jurassic World Rebirth is the latest in a long line of films featuring humans versus dinosaurs brought back to life by InGen. While the movie was criticized for being unoriginal, less engaging than previous installments, and for not moving the Jurassic Park story forward, an early idea for the film could have addressed these issues significantly.
Jurassic World Rebirth kicks off a new era for the Jurassic franchise, introducing a completely fresh set of characters. The story follows a team of dinosaur trackers tasked with infiltrating a deserted InGen facility to extract DNA from three of the island’s most fearsome dinosaurs. Their mission is fraught with danger, as they face numerous colossal threats, including a powerful, escaped dinosaur known as the Distortus rex.
Biosyn Was Almost The Villain Of Rebirth, Not InGen

The latest Jurassic World film revisits the story of InGen, the company founded by John Hammond and a central antagonist throughout the Jurassic Park franchise. InGen was responsible for bringing dinosaurs back to life and creating both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. However, Jurassic World Dominion took a chance by shifting the focus away from InGen and towards a new genetics company called Biosyn.
Because Jurassic World Dominion wasn’t well-received and didn’t make a big splash in popular culture, the creators of the new film, Rebirth, seem to have intentionally moved away from its story. That’s likely why characters and plot elements from Dominion, including the Biosyn corporation, aren’t included in Rebirth, which is being presented as a fresh start for fans. However, early concept art suggests that wasn’t the original plan.
This concept art for Jurassic World Rebirth, originally shared on ArtStation, depicts a character discovering an abandoned lab. Interestingly, it’s not an InGen facility. The roof is marked with the Biosyn name and logo, suggesting Biosyn was originally planned to play a role in Rebirth. It’s possible they were intended to be responsible for the Distortus rex, rather than InGen.
Biosyn Would Have Better Connected Rebirth To Jurassic World Dominion

It seems the filmmakers behind Jurassic World Rebirth made a mistake by dropping the Biosyn storyline. Biosyn was a fresh addition in Jurassic World Dominion, finally explaining the goals of Lewis Dodgson from the original Jurassic Park. It felt like the franchise had found a compelling new antagonist, so it’s disappointing that Rebirth moved away from it after just one movie.
There isn’t much overlap between the stories of Rebirth and Dominion, so keeping the Biosyn corporation involved could have created a stronger connection between them. Although Dominion wasn’t a critical success, it was very popular, earning over $1 billion worldwide. Because of this, many people watching Dominion would likely already be familiar with Biosyn, meaning keeping Dodgson’s company in the story wouldn’t have confused or turned off viewers.
It would have been more logical for Biosyn to create the Distortus rex. InGen primarily focused on traditional hybrids, while Biosyn seemed more willing to take risks, as demonstrated by Dodgson’s locust scheme in Dominion. Biosyn might have seen creating a dangerous creature like the Distortus as a way to surpass InGen. Ultimately, the film doesn’t provide a convincing reason for InGen to develop something so extreme.
Using Biosyn instead of InGen could have given the new Jurassic films a fresh start. InGen was central to the first five movies, and bringing it back for Rebirth felt repetitive. Biosyn, being a newer concept, offered a chance to differentiate the new series from the originals while still developing the storyline introduced in Dominion.
While sticking with the familiar InGen would be the safest bet for Universal, potentially avoiding risks and building on a long-established brand, the Jurassic franchise needs innovation after seven movies to stay fresh. Exploring the Biosyn storyline could have revitalized the series, but Jurassic World Rebirth didn’t take that chance.
