The exclusive run in cinemas for “Jurassic World: Rebirth” is nearing its end. On Sunday, Universal Pictures announced that the fourth Jurassic World film dominated the box office with a total of $147.3 million earned domestically in its first five days, including a $91.5 million three-day holiday weekend haul, and an additional $171 million internationally, bringing its estimated global revenue to $318.3 million. This is the largest opening for Hollywood this year and the second-best debut of the franchise, trailing only the first Jurassic World movie which reawakened the dormant Jurassic Park films in 2015.
As a dedicated cinephile, I was thrilled to witness the seventh chapter in the Jurassic saga, titled “Jurassic World Rebirth,” grace the big screen on July 2nd. Despite receiving a B from CinemaScore and a 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, and with no IMAX screens available, this film didn’t disappoint the eager audience waiting for the new Jurassic era, featuring the talents of Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. In a statement, Universal Domestic Distribution Chief Jim Orr described “Jurassic World Rebirth” as “the perfect summer blockbuster… an epic, edge-of-your-seat adventure with an incredible cast, visually stunning direction, offering the best that the cinematic experience has to offer.
It seems that the highly anticipated film “Jurassic World Rebirth” is set to debut digitally before summer ends on August 5th. According to DVDs Release Dates, this digital release will occur only a month after the movie’s exclusive theater run has ended.
Starting July 10, the movie “Rebirth” will give up some of its screens in North America to the upcoming film “Superman,” which is set for release on July 11. The summer season is already packed with movies like “The Smurfs Movie” (July 18) and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (July 25), as well as Universal’s own live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” and Brad Pitt’s Apple movie titled “F1: The Movie.” This film is expected to have made most of its earnings by the time it becomes available on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, YouTube, and Apple TV. However, it will continue to play in theaters even as it becomes digitally accessible.
In just 35 days after hitting theaters on June 10, 2022, the movie “Jurassic World Dominion” raked in an impressive $354.7 million at the domestic box office before transitioning to digital platforms on July 14, 2022. The film concluded its 15-week theatrical run with a staggering global revenue of $1.004 billion.
2020 saw Universal Studios and AMC reach a deal during the pandemic. This allowed Universal to release its movies on premium Video On Demand (PVOD) after 17 days of exclusive theatrical screening, which included three full weekends. Similarly, in the same year, Universal Studios and Cinemark came to an understanding: at least three full weekends (17 days) of theatrical exclusivity were required; under this agreement, any film that earned over $50 million or was part of a franchise would have to be shown exclusively in cinemas for at least five full weeks (31 days) before being made available on PVOD.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve noticed that, apart from Universal, most film studios make their movies available for on-demand streaming 18 to 36 days after release, usually priced between $20 and $30 for digital rental or purchase. Disney, however, tends to wait 60 days. The theatrical window for the movie “Rebirth” is currently 34 days.
2021 saw Comcast’s Chairman/CEO Brian Roberts express that Universal would emphasize a distribution model that has proven successful with a blend of formats, as numerous theaters were closed due to the pandemic. While some film studio and cinema executives advocate for a 45-day compulsory delay, Universal has thrived by releasing their major productions at home theaters earlier rather than later.
In a recent announcement, Universal Studios shared that the film “Wicked,” which generated $756.2 million at the global box office following its November 22, 2024 release, garnered an astounding $70 million in its first week on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD). This revenue stream became accessible for purchase or rental just 39 days after the film’s theatrical debut. The movie went on to earn an additional $30 million from PVOD, bringing its total earnings to over $100 million. Peter Levinsohn, Chairman of Global Distribution at NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, highlighted during CinemaCon 2025 that “We are a theatrical-first company.” He emphasized the importance of theaters as the cornerstone of their business, stating, “The theater is where our brand is created and serves as the benchmark for the value of all ancillary windows. However, we must adapt to meet consumers’ needs, as not every movie will be seen in a theater.
Jurassic World Rebirth is now playing in theaters.
