You’ll likely require a larger vessel for all these Easter eggs hidden within “Jurassic World Rebirth.” This film, a tribute to classic Steven Spielberg works such as “Jaws” and the original “Jurassic Park,” incorporates elements like a Mosasaurus and Spinosaurus sequence in the dinosaur-infested waters surrounding a tropical island, as well as an acknowledgement to Sam Neill’s paleontologist character Dr. Alan Grant from the original film. After director Gareth Edwards’ affectionate homage to the Jurassic series hit home theaters, the creators are starting to unveil some of the subtle Easter eggs, references, and nods that may have slipped past viewers.
When the spec ops mercenary Zora Bennett, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, and Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist played by Jonathan Bailey, travel to South America to hire a boat for Ile Saint-Hubert – an island known for its genetically engineered dinosaurs from InGen, formerly used in closed theme parks – they encounter Captain Duncan Kincaid, a former MARSOC comrade of Zora’s, played by Mahershala Ali.
Jaws
At Van Dijk’s Bar & Grill, production designer James Clyne notes in a recent featurette, there are numerous nods to the 1975 film, Jaws. As Clyne explains, set decorating is fascinating because it allows for small narratives to unfold. The bar and grill, constructed from a dilapidated outdoor café in the heart of Bah Gun, Thailand, boasts an impressive eight-foot Mosasaurus jaw and a portion of the Orca, the fishing boat commanded by Robert Shaw’s character Quint in Jaws.
In the bar, Quint had a pedal for hunting the shark, Edwards noted. Added Clyne, “We duplicated the foot plate and attached it to the bar, so when you pull it, there’s a dramatic reveal at the end, mimicking the shark’s jaw.
Displayed on the wall is an Arizona license plate featuring the number 75 and the tag “AMITYISL”. This plate signifies Steven Spielberg’s childhood in Arizona, as well as the release of his iconic film, ‘Jaws’, which was 50 years ago in 1975. The movie depicts Amity Island being terrorized by a man-eating shark. A subtle nod can also be found in the nearby Wyoming license plate “DLS1”, which honors Denis L. Stewart, a Wyoming native who served as an executive producer on ‘Jaws’ and later co-produced another collaboration between Spielberg and Frank Marshall: ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, released in 2008.
As for ships, I, being Bobby Atwater on the Essex, sport a badge with a mongoose and the phrase “opus est major navi” – which translates to “We need a larger vessel.” Just like Chief Brody from Jaws aptly put it, “You’re gonna require a bigger boat.
Jurassic Park
The vessel known as Kincaid’s boat, initially a disguised and minimalist military patrol boat, painted in a dull gray, was yearned to be embellished, given a vibrant touch – thus the desire for a splash of color and some lively charm.
You might find something interesting about our paint job – the back portion of the vehicle is painted in a red that closely resembles the iconic gray and red Jeep Wranglers from Jurassic Park. We chose this red, specifically a warm, rusty-orange shade, as a subtle tribute to the original movie.” (Clyne)
A subtle reference to the movie “Jurassic Park” that might go unnoticed is the T-shirt worn by Isabella Delgado (Audrina Miranda), which says “La Vida Encuentra Su Camino,” a Spanish translation of the famous quote from the original 1993 film: “Life finds a way.
As the costume designer, I was tasked by Gareth with obtaining a logo T-shirt for him. The design featured a pelican, a symbol that held significance after the first ‘Jurassic Park’ movie, where pelicans were seen flying at its conclusion. Beneath the pelican, the Spanish phrase ‘la vida encuentra un camino,’ which translates to ‘life finds a way,’ was also included.
In addition to a subtle nod to the character Dr. Ian Malcolm from “Jurassic Park”, played by Jeff Goldblum, the movie “Rebirth” explicitly features Dr. Alan Grant. At one point, Bailey’s Loomis remarks, “I’ve been on digs since I was 12,” implying a long-standing career in paleontology. Later, he reveals that he studied under Dr. Alan Grant as a postdoctoral fellow. Loomis’ attire includes references to Grant and Snakewater, Montana, the location of the initial introduction of the child-phobic paleontologist, Dr. Alan Grant, and Dr. Ellie Sattler, portrayed by Laura Dern, in the original “Jurassic Park” film.
The identical object that was once attached to Grant’s belt is now in the possession of Loomis. As Differ clarifies, it’s a folding shovel with an unusual shape. They created one for Grant, and they invented a story suggesting he had passed it on to Loomis. Consequently, Loomis also wears this gift from Grant.
A subtler tribute to Neill’s “Jurassic Park” can be found in the blood-stained scarf worn by tattooed deck hand Nina, played by Philippine Velge. This scarf mysteriously washes up near LeClerc (Bechir Sylvain), reminiscent of the scarf pattern that Sattler uses to tie around Grant’s neck in the early scenes of “Jurassic Park.
Star Wars
In the beginning of the story, “Rebirth,” we encounter Martin Krebbs, a representative from Parker-Genix Pharmaceutical, during a traffic congestion in Manhattan due to Bronto Billy, the last known sauropod residing in North America.
In this scene, a close-up of Krebbs’ side mirror cleverly references the “must go faster” T-Rex chase from the original Jurassic Park, where the warning “objects in mirror are closer than they appear” is visible. Additionally, Krebbs’ vehicle’s license plate reads “SC4R1F,” which is a nod to the planet Scarif from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2015), directed by Edwards. Furthermore, a Crichton Middle School bus in the scene pays tribute to Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton.
A Jurassic Cameo
The NeoJurassic Era began with the release of the movie “Jurassic World” directed by Colin Trevorrow in 2015, and he also led the production of “Jurassic World Dominion” in 2022. Interestingly, despite not being connected to the franchise’s “Rebirth,” director Steven Spielberg disclosed that Trevorrow secretly appears in a cameo when Johansson’s character Zora and Friend’s character Krebbs discuss a potential life-saving drug. This drug, combined with paleo DNA, could theoretically cure heart disease in humans.
At one point during their conversation, Scarlett and Rupert find themselves chatting near the water’s edge, with passing ferry boats adding to the scenic backdrop. As a boat sails by, they notice a father and child aboard, and in a friendly gesture, they wave at them. To their surprise, the person waving back was none other than Colin Trevorrow – who was unaware that he was acknowledging Scarlett and Rupert. This fun encounter took place without either party knowing each other’s identities initially.
Spielbergian Shoutouts
In the thrilling climax, the main characters – Zora, Loomis, Kincaid, and the Delgados – find themselves in a high-stakes chase at the Qualtech Gas Station on Ile Saint-Hubert. This escape is similar to the raptor pursuit scene from Jurassic Park, as they evade the Mutadons.
Take a good look around, you may find an Amity Island postcard (similar to what was seen in the movie Jaws), a yellow raincoat like the one worn by Mikey in The Goonies, a keychain replica of a flare, similar to the one used by Dr. Grant to scare off the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, Isla Sorna Pure Costa Rican Spiced Rum (inspired by the 2001 Spielberg-produced Jurassic Park III which was set on Isla Sorna), and magazines covered with images from Poltergeist (1982) and Back to the Future (1985), both of which were produced by Spielberg.
Jurassic World Rebirth is now available to rent or own on digital.
