The trailer for “Jurassic World: Rebirth” has been released, sparking a flurry of conversation among regular moviegoers. This has reignited conversations about the whole “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” series, with people questioning where “Rebirth” fits within this continuity. Upon watching the “Jurassic World: Rebirth” trailer, many viewers felt that this seventh film appears to be much more ominous, terrifying, and exhilarating than its recent installments in the franchise. And at this point in time, this is exactly what the series needs to rejuvenate itself.
It’s high time for the Jurassic World series to revisit its horror-focused beginnings and bring back that terrifying atmosphere.
Jurassic Park Was Always A Horror Story
Michael Crichton’s novel “Jurassic Park” is undeniably a chilling horror-thriller, infused with his signature blend of science and sci-fi elements. The book gained massive popularity due to its gripping, page-turning quality; readers who have delved into it can attest (with some criticisms) that director Steven Spielberg toned down the suspense and emphasized the awe-inspiring spectacle of dinosaurs coexisting with humans on screen. However, even with these creative alterations, Spielberg’s 1993 “Jurassic Park” film adaptation became a global sensation because it also provided the heart-pounding, exhilarating adventure that drew millions to cinemas (and made them return for more).
It’s been admitted by the director of “Jurassic World: Dominion,” Gareth Edwards, that the initial “Jurassic Park” film possessed a chilling, horror-like quality which seemed to diminish in subsequent sequels.
Edwards shared with Vanity Fair that “Jurassic Park” feels like a horror movie within the context of witness protection. Many people may not consider it as such since they watched it growing up, but when he was in the theater watching the T-rex attack, he admitted it left him genuinely terrified. He noted that the scene is one of the best-directed in film history, making it challenging for anyone to attempt a re-creation.
For quite some time, long-standing producer of the “Jurassic World” series, Frank Marshall, hinted that the storyline for “Jurassic World Rebirth” isn’t just a simple retelling, but a chance to reinvent the impact the movies have had on the genre. The team sent to retrieve genetic material from the original “Jurassic Park” testing lab on a secluded island serves as this opportunity.
In a fresh setting, I find myself navigating unfamiliar territories. This isn’t the same old jungle I’m accustomed to; it’s bigger, wilder, and more complex. There are additional waterways, towering cliffs that make me pause, and a sense of the unknown lurking around every bend. It’s a place filled with a touch of everything that gives me a shiver of excitement. – A Fan’s Perspective
Marshall mentioned these as the dinosaurs that failed to function. He pointed out some genetic alterations in them. Though they are all grounded in real dinosaur research, their appearances vary slightly from what we know.
Jurassic World Rebirth Will Tap Into Primal Fear
Gareth Edwards explained his directing style for the movie “Rebirth” by stating the key themes that would generate fear and excitement: “There’s a raw, instinctive terror hidden within all of us. As mammals, we have an inherent fear of a larger creature that might someday threaten us or our kin. Seeing it unfold on screen makes you think, ‘I knew it… We’ve had it too good for too long.’
Every Jurassic Park and/or World movie has always hinted at the danger of dinosaurs attacking humans, but none have truly managed to escape the shadow of the first film’s success to deliver pure genre thrills. The massive box office success of the original Jurassic Park ensured that the films were kept family-friendly, and thus no subsequent scene has matched the sheer terror of Spielberg’s initial T. Rex attack on the tour vehicle. Scenes like the raptor bursting through a wall to attack Ellie Sattler or almost catching Alan Grant in the kitchen are the closest we’ve come to jump scares. However, Jurassic World: Dominion aims to break that trend, with Mahershala Ali hinting ominously, “There’s no draft of the film where everyone makes it out alive.
Jurassic World Rebirth has a release date of July 2nd.
