The Jurassic Park series has consistently performed well commercially for over three decades, even if critics haven’t always loved the films. This summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth is a perfect example. Despite receiving mixed reviews (a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie was a huge success, earning $868.4 million worldwide. While that’s lower than the other Jurassic World films (all of which made over $1 billion), it proves the franchise is still incredibly profitable. Universal Pictures has no plans to stop making Jurassic Park movies anytime soon.
According to industry insider Jeff Sneider’s latest newsletter, the studio is planning to bring back the team behind the successful film Jurassic World Rebirth for the next movie in the series. Director Gareth Edwards is close to finalizing a deal to return, and stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are also expected to reprise their roles. The film’s strong box office performance is the primary reason for bringing Edwards back on board. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Should Jurassic World Rebirth Get a Sequel?

Looking at box office success, another Jurassic Park movie seems like a good idea. Jurassic World Rebirth is currently the fourth highest-grossing film of the year globally, trailing only A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Ne Zha 2. With few big releases left in 2025, Rebirth is almost certain to finish the year as a top 10 film worldwide. Even as movie trends change and affect genres like superhero films, audiences are still clearly enthusiastic about dinosaur adventures. A sequel to Rebirth is likely to be very profitable for Universal.
From a creative standpoint, it’s clear the Jurassic Park franchise hasn’t lived up to the original’s success. While the first movie remains a classic, subsequent films have struggled to recapture that magic, despite interesting ideas like dinosaurs existing in today’s world. They often fall short with uninspired stories and forgettable characters. Jurassic World Rebirth follows this pattern, receiving criticism for being predictable and lacking a strong script. Though the film featured likeable leads, it couldn’t replicate the impact of the original’s iconic characters and adventure. Some believe the core concept has been exhausted and it’s time to end the series.
As a huge Jurassic Park fan, I’m really hoping the creative team focuses on telling a truly compelling story with the next film. While the latest movie still made a lot of money – almost $900 million! – it didn’t quite reach the billion-dollar mark like the previous one. I know things are different after the pandemic, but Dominion managed it, so the slightly lower numbers for Rebirth worry me a little. It feels like maybe the franchise isn’t as exciting as it used to be. If the next movie gets lukewarm reviews, I’m afraid people might skip going to the theater. We all remember how poorly Jurassic Park III did – bad reviews really hurt its box office numbers, and I don’t want to see that happen again! A great story is key to bringing the excitement back.
Universal might be wise to wait before rushing into another Jurassic movie. Jurassic World in 2015 was such a hit partly because it had been a long time since a Jurassic film, making the return of dinosaurs feel fresh and exciting – and the idea of a working dinosaur park was a great concept. If they’re already planning a Rebirth sequel now, it suggests they want it released quickly, so it will be interesting to see if releasing films so close together impacts their success. Hopefully, the team has a strong plan to ensure the new film lives up to the quality of the original.
