Just Cause Developer Avalanche Studios Closes Its Offices in Liverpool

In September, Avalanche Studios, the team behind the Just Cause series, cut 31 jobs shortly after deciding to cancel their game, Contraband.

They also revealed they are closing their Liverpool, England office. The studio had recently made an official announcement about the closure.

Reports surfaced in August about the game Contraband. Sources indicated that Microsoft temporarily halted development, but didn’t cancel the project altogether.

However, a few weeks later, Microsoft went on to announce the cancellation of the game.

Avalanche Studios Group announced on their website that they had begun discussing the potential closure of their Liverpool studio with employees.

Although those specific offices have closed, the rest of the company is still operating normally. Only the 31 employees who worked in those locations were affected.

Avalanche recognizes the significant contributions of those departing, noting their talent, dedication, and passion have benefited every project. The company is committed to supporting its employees during this change and continuing to deliver high-quality games to its players.

The game Contraband was originally revealed during an Xbox presentation at E3 in 2021. However, it’s not the only project Microsoft has cancelled this year.

Games like the Perfect Dark reboot, Everwild, and a new online game from ZeniMax Online Studios were all cancelled, leading to around 9,000 people losing their jobs.

According to a new report, Microsoft’s frequent layoffs could be caused by its extremely high profit expectations.
