Just What Is Going on with Sony and Indie Dev Giant Squid?

Overnight, rumors started circulating that Sony might be working more closely with the independent game studio, Giant Squid.

Gematsu recently spotted that Sony and Santa Monica Studio have jointly trademarked “Sword of the Sea” in Europe. This comes after the game received very positive reviews upon its release.

While it’s not ground-breaking news, it is somewhat unusual.

There’s a lot of discussion about what’s next for Giant Squid. Some think PlayStation might now own the rights to their games, while others suggest Giant Squid could join PlayStation Studios as an in-house development team.

However, the truth is likely more straightforward. Sony put a significant amount of money into developing Sword of the Sea, and that probably explains things.

The developer has publicly stated that the game was rescued by funding and inclusion in the PlayStation Plus Extra subscription service from the Japanese company.

Founder Matt Nava noted:

It’s great that Sony offers a program like this. It shows that even a large and influential company like Sony has people who are passionate about the creative side of entertainment.

This likely means PlayStation has invested money in the game, and that’s why they filed for the trademark.

We’re reaching out to both Sony and Giant Squid for more information and will share any updates we receive.
