Justin Sun paid $6M for a banana taped to a wall and now plans to eat it

As a seasoned crypto investor with a keen eye for market trends and a healthy dose of skepticism, I can’t help but shake my head at Justin Sun’s latest antics. The man is known for his flamboyant personality and questionable moves, but this latest stunt takes the cake. Spending millions on a piece of fruit taped to a wall? It’s hard not to see it as a publicity stunt, albeit an expensive one.

As a passionate crypto investor, I recently learned about an intriguing event involving the founder of Tron, Justin Sun. At a New York auction, he splurged $6.2 million on an artistic piece that featured nothing more than a banana duct-taped to a wall. Here’s the twist: now, Justin plans to consume this expensive piece of art!

Sun posted on Nov 21st that he had purchased a banana. This isn’t simply an artwork; it symbolizes a cultural connection spanning the realms of art, internet memes, and the crypto community.

In the near future, he plans on enjoying a banana himself, contributing to a distinctive artistic endeavor.

The piece in question is titled “Comedian” by Maurizio Cattelan, which essentially consists of a banana affixed to a wall using duct tape. However, due to the fact that the owner can swap out the banana when it spoils and replace the tape as necessary, one could argue that Sun has effectively purchased guidelines for attaching a banana to a wall and an authenticity certificate to assert it as “Comedian.

At a recent auction hosted by Sotheby’s, they announced that intense bidding lasting more than six minutes occurred for the piece, marking the very first time it had been sold at auction.

The bidding kicked off at $800,000 and soon soared into the millions as the auctioneer playfully commented “this one is almost escaping the auction hall” and encouraged bidders not to “miss out on it.” This prompted sighs of frustration from the spectators.

The sun successfully placed a winning bid of $6.2 million (which included $1 million in Sotheby’s fees), surpassing five other bidders, as the gavel came down – a price that was more than four times the pre-auction estimate ranging from $1 million to $1.5 million.

Sun probably needs all the nutrients he can get.

According to reports, the creator of Tron’s blockchain handles a significant amount of transactions for the world’s largest stablecoin, Tether (USDT). It is said that this coin is currently being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department on suspected criminal charges.

Sun has also reportedly been under criminal investigation by the FBI and New York prosecutors.

In addition to Tron, he faced a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission in March 2023. The accusation was that he illegally sold the Tron (TRX) token as an unregistered security and engaged in wash-trading to artificially inflate its price. However, he has stated his denial of these charges.

If Sun consumes the banana, he’ll become the third known individual to have eaten a piece of art.

Last year in April, a student found himself peckish during an exhibition at a Seoul art museum. To satisfy his hunger, he consumed a banana, then reattached the peel to the museum wall. Later on, he confessed that he had done so because he had missed breakfast.

In a surprising turn of events at the 2019 Miami Art Basel premiere, the performance artist David Datuna caused a stir when he consumed the artwork (a banana) after it was sold for $120,000. Despite this, the artwork was later replaced, and no legal repercussions were imposed on him.
