Justin Trudeau Subtly References Katy Perry With Halloween Costume

Katy Perry’s “left shark” lives on.

More than a decade after a shark dancer gained fame for its moves during Katy Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl halftime performance—the one on her left, specifically—Justin Trudeau playfully referenced the moment in a Halloween costume as he and Katy Perry began dating.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dressed as an inflatable shark for a Halloween costume with his 11-year-old son, Hadrien. Hadrien dressed as a surfer, pretending to be scared of his dad’s shark, and holding a surfboard that looked like it had been bitten. Justin and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau share three children, including Hadrien.

Justin shared a photo from Halloween showing him and his son, Hadrien, in coordinating costumes. Justin dressed as a shark, while Hadrien was a surfer, and Justin jokingly referenced the famous ‘left shark’ meme. They created the costumes together as a fun father-son project.

Besides the photo of Justin and Hadrien posing together, there were also pictures of the 53-year-old—who is also the father of Xavier Trudeau, 17, and Ella-Grace Trudeau, 16—making the surfboard from foam at his kitchen table, and of Hadrien painting it.

Justin’s mention of Katy Perry might have seemed like an inside joke to some, but her fans immediately understood the reference. His comment section quickly filled up with a GIF from her 2015 Super Bowl halftime performance, specifically featuring the famous ‘Left Shark’ moment.

Just days before Justin publicly acknowledged Katy Perry, she had hinted at their relationship on social media. This came months after they were first seen together at a dinner in Montreal, sparking rumors of a romance. Katy is a mother to 5-year-old Daisy Dove with her ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom.

Katy shared a video on Instagram for her 41st birthday showing her blowing out candles on a cake backstage at one of her concerts. A quick glimpse in the video reveals Justin among the dancers and crew, smiling and cheering her on.

She captioned the Oct. 29 photo carousel, alongside a biting lip and heart emoji, “Level 41.”

While Justin was enjoying a Halloween swim, Katy Perry continued her European tour, performing in Prague and Munich on October 30th and 31st.

Katy shared photos from her trip to Prague on Instagram, jokingly writing that she ‘went in [the city’s] clock and [is] filled with [its] schnitzel’ to caption the Halloween-themed post.
