As a critic, I’m telling you, Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters is a genuine phenomenon. It’s become the most-watched original film they’ve ever had – seriously, breaking all previous viewing records. It’s easily one of the biggest success stories of the summer, and a must-see if you haven’t already checked it out.
This animated fantasy movie is about a Korean girl group with a secret: they’re powerful demon hunters! They face off against a rival boyband who aren’t quite what they seem.
The film’s worldwide success shows how K-pop is becoming increasingly popular in Western countries. Its soundtrack has been a hit, producing three songs that reached the top 40 in the UK charts, including ‘Golden,’ which held the number 1 spot for nine weeks (though not all in a row).
It’s not surprising that a second movie is being made, but fans may have to be patient. According to Deadline, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are currently aiming for a release in 2029.
As a big fan, I’m a little worried about the four-year wait between these movies. It could hurt the series if it loses steam, but honestly, I’d rather they take their time and deliver something truly great. No one wants a rushed, disappointing sequel – that would really let fans down.
Sony Pictures Animation has gained a reputation for innovative and ambitious animated projects, like K-Pop Demon Hunters and the popular Spider-Verse movies. However, developing these unique styles and concepts takes time and effort.
Even with reports of animators working extremely long hours, fans had to wait five years for ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ in 2023. The final movie in the trilogy, ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’, isn’t expected to come out until 2027.
Looking at it closely, the delay in continuing the K-Pop Demon Hunters story isn’t too shocking. The big question now is whether the next installment will be released in movie theaters.
Sony Pictures Animation initially sold the movie to Netflix, which hinted they weren’t sure it would succeed in theaters. However, the film’s eventual success proved those concerns wrong.
However, Netflix hasn’t typically released even its high-quality movies in theaters, prioritizing its subscribers instead. This approach has often created conflict with movie theater companies.
The movie K-Pop Demon Hunters featured sing-along showings in theaters twice – once in August and again around Halloween. These special showings helped the film earn almost $25 million worldwide.
Now that the first film has a dedicated fanbase, a sequel could be very successful, but it needs everyone involved to fully commit to a theatrical release. As of now, according to Deadline, a decision hasn’t been made.
If a sequel is made, Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo will probably return as Rumi, Mira, and Zoey – the members of the K-pop group Huntr/x.
