It’s not exactly breaking news, but there are whispers that Netflix is considering making a follow-up to the massively successful animated movie K-Pop Demon Hunters.
Initially showing modest viewership upon its debut on the streaming platform, the movie (originally produced by Sony Pictures Animation) has since soared to become Netflix’s most-viewed original film, surpassing Red Notice from 2021. Over the past three weeks, there has been no drop in the number of viewers watching it.
By the 24th of August, the streaming version had garnered approximately 236 million views. A cinematic sing-along variant was debuted in U.S. theaters this past weekend, giving fans an opportunity to perform the movie’s powerful soundtrack. It is projected that the film grossed around $19.2 million at the box office over the weekend, making it the number one pick for the region – a milestone as it marks the first time a Netflix production has ever achieved this feat.
According to Deadline, there are whispers about a follow-up, although it seems the project is currently still in its initial phases. Netflix chose not to discuss this potential development further.
While not busy with their popular music careers, K-pop stars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey secretly fight off supernatural threats as fearless demon hunters to ensure the safety of their fans from a persistent otherworldly danger, guided by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
United, they’ll encounter their toughest opponent yet – a charismatic rival band, who happen to be disguised demons.
Anticipation is high for the film’s viewership this week, as a sing-along version of it has recently been made available on the streaming platform after its initial cinema release.
Following a recent announcement by Deadline, it appears there are plans for a sequel. This revelation comes after Netflix Films’ chairperson, Dan Lin, expressed his enthusiasm towards potentially embarking on another thrilling journey for Huntrix, as shared with Newsweek.
He noted: “The key to KPDH’s success is its one-of-a-kind, innovative plot, therefore, should we opt for a sequel, we aim to be meticulous in crafting any subsequent tales featuring our beloved demon hunters, ensuring they maintain the charm and uniqueness of the original film.
