The second season of “Kaiju No. 8” is currently underway, airing new episodes every Saturday. From its very first episode, the season has been action-packed and full of high stakes that propel the story forward. Introducing the First Division led by Captain Gen Narumi, who is known as the strongest warrior in the Defense Force, the series also explores the transfer of several characters from the Third Division, who were key players throughout the first season. This change in cast has resulted in some favorite characters taking a back seat. In the initial five episodes, the story largely revolves around Kafka, the main character, and Kikoru Shinomiya, who has joined the First Division and significantly boosted the team’s power.
Due to the First Division’s dominance, especially with Kafka now integrated into their Defense Force and wielding Kaiju powers, they started to eclipse the other divisions significantly. Even strong teams like the Third Division, comprising warriors such as Hoshina Soshiro and Mina Ashiro, were reduced to secondary roles with minimal narrative importance. Characters who had been central in the first season, particularly Reno Ichikawa, appeared to be sidelined. However, the latest episode of Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 hints at Reno’s comeback, which should rectify the misstep of keeping him out of the spotlight for such an extended period. As a key character intended to be the secondary lead, his return is a welcome development in the storyline.
Kaiju No. 8’s Deuteragonist Finally Gets a Deserving Comeback
In the sixth episode of Season 2 of “Kaiju No. 8,” titled “Compatible User,” we delve deeper into the Defense Force’s situation post the appearance of Kaiju No. 10 after consuming Isao Shinomiya. The Defense Force is aggressively seeking novel tactics to confront Kaiju No. 10. In their quest for information, Hoshina turns to Kaiju No. 9, who was captured earlier. Kaiju No. 9 discloses that Kaiju No. 10 is his creator, compelling the Defense Force to devise multiple strategies for future battles. A significant strategy involves enhancing the capabilities of the new generation of fighters, and there’s talk about possibly employing a potent weapon stored away.
It comes to light that Defense Force has a weapon crafted from Kaiju No. 6, formerly known as the Kaiju ruler who caused Kikoru’s mother’s demise. This formidable weapon suit is incredibly powerful, but no one could ever control it until now – in these critical times, tests show Reno Ichikawa to be the best fit for use. Despite its heavy toll on the user and the potential for shortening a life span, Reno’s captain advises against taking it up. However, determined to aid Kafka in future battles, Reno chooses to shoulder this burden and transform into a warrior.
This episode sheds light on how severely the Kaiju No. 6 weapon affects its wielder, but despite this, Reno remains resolute. By embracing the title “King of the Kaiju,” Reno’s position as a key character is secured, signifying that he will significantly influence the ending of Kaiju No. 8‘s storyline. This development is refreshing given that such an intriguing character was overlooked in the main story during the first season finale.
