Kaley Cuoco has responded to questions about whether “Based on a True Story” will return for a third season, following Peacock’s cancellation of the show.
Kaley Cuoco both starred in and helped create the show Based on a True Story. The series follows her character, Ava Bartlett, and her husband, Nathan (played by Chris Messina), as they launch a true-crime podcast. Ava discovers that a new friend of Nathan’s, their plumber Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman), is actually a famous serial killer called the West Side Ripper, and he feeds them information for their show. The first season ended with the reveal of a copycat killer and Matt framing Nathan for his crimes. Despite these dramatic twists, Peacock canceled the show after one season.
During an interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant about her new series, Vanished, Kaley Cuoco discussed the cancellation of Based on a True Story. She shared how much she loved working on the show and how pleased she is that viewers enjoyed it. Here’s what she had to say:
I absolutely adored that show, and it means a lot when someone else says they did too. I always felt like it didn’t get enough recognition, especially because I found it so hilarious. Working with Chris Messina was a highlight of my career, and it was a really memorable experience – I was even pregnant during filming! We had so much fun creating all sorts of wild and unexpected moments. The storyline was completely over-the-top, and that’s exactly what made it special. So, thanks for bringing it up!
Kaley Cuoco doesn’t think a third season of Based on a True Story is likely right now, but she’s definitely not ruling it out if the chance comes up. She believes the show will find a wider audience over time as more people discover it on streaming platforms.
I’d definitely be open to doing another season if asked. Working on that show was a real highlight for me – I’ve enjoyed many of my jobs, but that one was particularly fun. Chris and I really clicked, and it felt incredibly freeing to be able to experiment and be creative. While it didn’t become as big of a hit as I’d hoped, I still think it’s a funny and special show, and I’m grateful people watched it. I also have a feeling it might find a wider audience over time – these things happen, and shows often get rediscovered years later.
Season two of Based on a True Story received mostly positive reviews, earning an 83% rating from critics and a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Ben Gibbons of ScreenRant highlighted the season’s complex relationships – between Ava and her new friend, Nathan and Matt, and Matt with his girlfriend Tory – as a key strength, calling them “deliciously complicated.” Despite the positive feedback, the show was canceled, likely due to low viewership, though Peacock doesn’t typically share its streaming numbers.
The season finale revealed the identity of the person copying the West Side Ripper, but Matt then kidnapped them, leaving viewers wondering why. This mystery, along with Ava’s next move after her husband was falsely accused of being a serial killer, remains unsolved.
Though Based on a True Story has ended, Kaley Cuoco is now leading and producing Vanished, a suspenseful mystery series. She stars as Alice Monroe, whose boyfriend, Tom (Sam Claflin), mysteriously disappears while they’re on a romantic getaway in Paris. The four-episode series will premiere on MGM+ on February 1st.
