As a seasoned crypto investor who has weathered countless market fluctuations and navigated through the wild west of digital assets, I must admit that the latest development concerning Vice President Kamala Harris and potential running mate Gary Peters has left me somewhat perplexed.

In an unexpected twist, it appears that Vice President Kamala Harris, who had previously been seen as favorable towards the cryptocurrency sector, has made a move that hints at her skepticism or opposition towards digital currencies.

Harris to pick Michigan Senator Gary Peters?

Based on a recent report by Axios, it’s been speculated that Harris might be considering Michigan Senator Gary Peters, who is well-known for his skepticism towards cryptocurrency, as a potential running mate for the 2024 election.

As a researcher, I find myself reflecting upon recent developments only a few days after news broke about President Harris’s alleged efforts towards redefining relationships with the cryptocurrency sector. This move has stirred uncertainty and apprehension within the crypto community.

Furthermore, as per Reuters, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper was also speculated as a possible vice presidential candidate for Kamala Harris. Nevertheless, Cooper declined the nomination on July 29th, citing his reasons.

“It was a great privilege to be thought of for this position, but unfortunately, the timing isn’t ideal for both me and North Carolina to possibly be part of a national campaign at this moment.”

Peters’ anti-crypto stance

Alternatively, Axios stated that Peters expressed interest in the nomination and was trying to gather backing. Nevertheless, this information was met with skepticism within the cryptocurrency circle.

Peters is recognized for his firm opposition towards cryptocurrencies, having backed the Money Laundering Act of 2023, which underscores the role of cryptocurrencies in illegal funding for terrorist activities.

Remarking on the same back in 2023, he said,

In light of the immediate threat that funding for such militant groups presents, we request the Administration to disclose further information about their strategy to prohibit cryptocurrency from being used in terrorist financing.

Therefore, the crypto community showed disapproval towards Harris’s selection, as emphasized by Andrew Marshall, a prominent member at Chatham House.

“Feels a pretty dark horse to me <<. Scoop: Sen. Gary Peters emerges as VP dark horse.”

Impact on the memecoin and Polymarket

As a crypto investor, I’ve noticed that recent events have significantly affected my investment in KAMA, the memecoin inspired by Kamala Harris. Over the past 24 hours, its value has dipped by 18%.

Moreover, it seemed from Polymarket’s data that ex-President Donald Trump secured 59% of the votes, placing him in the lead, whereas Vice President Kamala Harris followed closely behind with 38% of the votes.
