Kangaroo is about….
The latest in a string of films that deliver exactly what you expect is ‘Kangaroo,’ which centers around a TV weatherman – though, more accurately, a baby kangaroo, or joey. The weatherman, Chris (played by Ryan Corr), is eager to escape the monotony of morning television and become a well-known presenter. However, his attempt to gain recognition goes terribly wrong during a live report from Bondi Beach. He ‘rescues’ a dolphin, only for it to die the next day – it had apparently beached itself to rest, and Chris unknowingly pushed it back out to sea. The dolphin’s unfortunate fate leads to Chris being branded ‘the man who killed a fish’ by the public, costing him his job. (This darkly humorous situation jokingly implies that Captain Birdseye might be a surprisingly dangerous character.)
Often, difficult times lead to better opportunities. This is true for him, as a new job offer allows him to leave the beautiful Bondi area and pursue a career elsewhere with a cross-country drive, signaling the start of a more positive phase in his life.
Those others in Kangaroo…..
I’m really invested in Charlie’s story – she’s dealing with so much grief after losing her dad, and honestly, she’s not being the easiest on her mom right now. Her dad was an artist who believed kangaroos were special, and she’s carrying on his memory by raising orphaned joeys, which is beautiful, but her mom isn’t thrilled about having them in the house. That’s where Chris comes in. He accidentally hits a kangaroo, leaving a joey orphaned, and Charlie immediately lays a ton of guilt on him – in a good way! – making him feel responsible for raising it until it’s old enough to be released. It’s hilarious watching him try to cope! He’s stuck in this tiny, rundown shack while his car’s fixed, with a tin bath as his bathroom and basically using the backyard as a toilet. It’s like the most basic, no-frills accommodation you can imagine – think Ryanair but for lodging!
Okay, so I just saw this movie, and it’s based on a real story – one of those feel-good tales about someone turning their life around. It follows Chris, who’s stuck in this tiny outback town while his car gets fixed. The town is full of quirky characters, and honestly, the barmaid, Jessie (played brilliantly by Rachel House – she’s wonderfully grumpy!), really runs the place. There are some really fun moments, like this hilarious scene where Chris practically wrestles a kangaroo that’s been hitting the gym! He’s at a low point, feeling like he has no friends, no purpose, and really needs a job. It honestly feels like a movie Meghan and Harry would love! But as the story goes on, Chris realizes there’s more to life than just being on TV – something a lot of TV personalities could learn, actually!
Should you see it?
Australia’s scenery is stunning, and the kangaroos are a major draw for anyone considering moving there – it’s hard not to be charmed! The film features adorable baby kangaroos (joeys) and unfolds at a relaxed pace. It’s a heartwarming, classic-style movie, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s sure to delight viewers of all ages.
