I’ve really enjoyed the glimpses we’ve gotten of Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on social media since filming for the new Jumanji movie started. The cast has been great at keeping the plot secret – Karen Gillan even playfully hid a storyboard, though everyone was likely focused on her physique! They all seem to be having a lot of fun, like in the interactions between Gillan and The Rock’s bodyguard.
Many people are familiar with Tanoai Reed, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s longtime stunt double, thanks to the story about Johnson giving him a truck while filming Jungle Cruise. Reed has worked with Johnson since The Scorpion King and has been his stunt double in numerous films throughout Johnson’s career. Now, they’re teaming up again for a new action-adventure sequel with Sony.
On the set of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s third Jumanji film (the fourth in the series), stunt performer Reed is working on the action scenes. But when filming isn’t happening, what do stunt doubles actually do? According to a humorous post by Karen Gillan, she’s put Reed to work as her personal umbrella holder!
Her Jumanji costume caused some discussion, but honestly, it’s tough to avoid a sunburn while filming in the sun wearing revealing clothes when you’re supposed to be a video game character! I was surprised she asked Dwayne Johnson’s stunt double to help, but someone needed to do it, and he seemed like the best person for the job – tall enough to reach and with some free time between takes.
And they say chivalry is dead.
The story of how Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson started working with his longtime stunt double, Tanoai Reed, is quite remarkable. Reed was an established Hollywood stuntman who had even dressed up as Johnson for Halloween before the movie The Scorpion King came out. Because he was a similar build and could wear Johnson’s costumes, he was immediately hired. Later, they discovered they were actually cousins – Johnson’s mother and Reed’s father knew each other.
It seems like fate brought this opportunity about – he’s now working on a project for Karen Gillan. That’s just how things go in Hollywood!
