The crime drama “Karen Pirie” returns to ITV this weekend, as its lead character, played by Lauren Lyle, tackles another unsolved mystery in the series’ second season.
Currently, we’ve been granted early access to the debut episode where character Karen receives a significant, high-stakes assignment due to fresh evidence emerging.
The evidence at hand was provided by Karen’s acquaintance, River (portrayed by the series’ originator Emer Kenny), who is not only an actor but also a professor specialized in forensic anthropology and archaeology. Remarkably, River has uncovered correlations between the skeleton discovered and the case under investigation.
In the video located at the beginning of this article, Steve John Shepherd’s Lees summon Karen and Chris Jenks’s Mint, informing them that they are dealing with a case related to the 1984 kidnapping of Catriona and Adam Grant.
River calls Cat “Scotland’s John Paul Getty” – with Mint thinking she means the former pope.

As I delve into this gripping cinematic tale, let me share that we follow the story of Catherine (or simply ‘Cat’), a young woman who finds herself in extraordinary circumstances. Cat is no ordinary citizen; she’s the daughter of an oil tycoon, and her life takes a dramatic turn when she is kidnapped, along with her newborn baby boy, Adam, at gunpoint by a shadowy figure.
Lees refers to it as one of the most significant unsolved missing person cases in our nation’s past, highlighting its severity. It appears that Karen is about to face a challenging situation this time, requiring her to handle intense scrutiny and media spotlight.
During a recent Q&A session for season 2, executive producer Simon Heath hinted at what viewers can anticipate, stating: “There are numerous unexpected turns – plenty of them. We venture outside our borders, traverse Europe, and you’ll find more fantastic post-punk tunes in the soundtrack.
In the meantime, Director Gareth Bryn stated, “It’s crucial not to assume anything or take things for granted.
Karen Pirie season 2 will air from Sunday 20th July 2025 on ITV1 and ITVX.
